Les Trem??? Anyone have experience with these?

Re: Les Trem??? Anyone have experience with these?

A trem on a Les Paul equates to square wheels on a car in my book.

Seriously, never saw one of those before. Someone must have used one on here....

I have no personal experience using that trem but I would be concerned about putting one on a semi-hollow body. It looks to me like that spring loaded spacer puts pressure on the top to balance out the string tension, I would be worried that it might warp the top on that area or go through it if there is no support underneath of it.

I don't know how Epiphones are made so it may or may not be a concern.

Kinda pricey when you could just go Bigsby. Stetsbar is even moreso, but atleast it seems a little bit more complex than the StewMac bar. The StewMac kit looks like it comes with a bar, two springs, vague instructions, half a corndog, and a note that says "good luck, champ."

I'll let you battle that one out with Mr. Neil Young

i had one a while ago on an esp ltd horizon guitar. did a pretty good job of staying in tune and the arm could be adjusted to any length you wanted. different than a bigsby. i would also be concerned about putting it on a hollowbody.

Re: Les Trem??? Anyone have experience with these?

I posted a thread about this a while ago...what they told me was that a Les Trem is like an easier-to-install version of a Bigsby...good for light trem but don't try to go all Hendrix on it.

The Stetsbar is supposed to be as effective as a vintage Strat tremelo -- so you CAN go all Hendrix on it. That's worth the extra money to me, I just haven't had the extra cash yet.

As for the semihollow thing...i guess it depends on how wide that block of maple running down the center of the guitar is. If you're basically mounting the bridge onto the maple block then you're probably fine but if the bridge is wider than the block i could see warping happening.

i'm not a luthier tho. in fact i'd barely call myself a guitarist.

would you know if the Les Trem and a Bigsby have about the same pitch range?

That was what i inferred from my thread on the subject a while ago...lemme find a link for it.

the les trem seemed to have a little more of a pitch range and didnt feel much like a bigsby. its use is real similar to a bigsby though....a little 'wobble' sounds here and there
