Less than $30 in mods makes a killer Strat!

Re: Less than $30 in mods makes a killer Strat!

ALF I posted in the tips and clips that I did the same thing to my JV...I was ordering the guardplate when I noticed that it was routed S/S/H, and I thought...I'd try it and it really is better that way!

Mine is black with a tortoise guars with all antiquity (cream) plastic parts and I love it! I did swap the pickups, but I put the JV pickups into my 68 reissue Strat...they really are great pickups!

BTW...to everyone reading this..."adjusting" the pole pieces on a Fender pickup can kill it...I have seen it done many times before, if you are gonna do this please know that it can make the pickup stop working!

True, on Fender-style pickups, the coil wire comes in direct contact with the magnet poles, so jerking the magnets around could scrape off the insulation and cause a short or even break the wire. So slow and gentle is the key...

Guy, black w/tortise is a killer combo! What pickups did you go for when you swapped?

I know playing with the magnets is a dangerous thing to do, but I was assured at the FDP that the new pickups with plastic bobbins were relatively safe to play with. Definately don't do this with fiber bobbin pickups.

how does the 50's mod affect tone? No treble loss as you roll down the volume?

Exactly. It's very clear sounding way far down on the vol knob. I think it also has a tendancy to "wake up" the pickups. It's like the pickups get a new lease on life, they're very open sounding and responsive after doing this mod.

I love it and wire all my guitars this way.

I got a set of CS Duncans...their Alnico II and I love them, but like I said in another post...the stock pickups from the JV are in my 68 reissue Strat! The Black and Tortoise looks great IMO, but so does yours!
