Let me see your Edwards guitars

I'm thinking about picking up an Edwards LP Custom, so while I mull it over I'd like to see your Edwards guitars and hear what you like/dislike about them.

Re: Let me see your Edwards guitars

Around $1500 to my door for an LP-125. Nitro finish, long neck tenon, (supposedly) one piece mahogany back, ebony board, SD Seth Lovers.

Edwards E-LP-130ALS/RE

Not mine, but the 130 comes in Lemon Drop, which I have, and Tobacco Burst.

These things are awesome right out of the box.
SD Antiquities.
PIO caps.
Bone nut.
Long tenon.
Awesome body carve.
And a thin finish over a maple veneer.
They are advertised as being made with mahogany, but they're so lightweight I suspect it's an asian tree in the mahogany family.

Mine wasn't completely stock as I got it used off of eBay from someone who owned it for a month, he got it from the original Canadian owner, 4 months after he bought it.
One of them replaced the PIO caps with Orange Drops and the pots with what looked to be a metered set, they were marked, and some weird wiring scheme.
I added some PIO caps I had and wired it '50s with independent volumes.
And that was it.
Everything else is stock and it's an absolutely amazing guitar for what I paid.

That said, IMO, new they easily compete with pretty much anything Gibson makes for under $1800/$2000.

I'd love to find a used E-LP-125ALS as they don't have the silly "relicing" the 130's have, but they're still pretty new, so no luck so far.

Good luck!

Re: Let me see your Edwards guitars

Incorrect top carve.
incorrect body size
African Mahogany
Incorrect Body Binding
Fake aged gold mustard color to the binding
Finishes, depending on model (lacquer taste) are thick and feel like wax candy
horrendous resale value.

fantastic players
Well built, and finish work (frets, nut,.etc.)
tone is a crapshoot like any guitar youbuy sight unseen.

If I were to buy another MIJ Les Paul, I prefer Tokai, or old Burny, Tokai,.high end Grecos, etc They have the correct body specs,.body binding,.etc.

I think if you can bend on looks, a used Heritage 157, or USA Hamer Monaco Elite (mine cost me a grand, barely touched) is a better deal. Correct woods, better finishes, more likely to find them locally,.etc.

Re: Let me see your Edwards guitars

I had an edwards sykes and loved it. really regret selling it, but had to thin the herd. Id buy another in a heart beat. They have nearly doubled in price tho.

Re: Let me see your Edwards guitars

Most are poly...there is an aged one which has a lacquer finish - which is the one mojo linked to.

They'll be a nice guitar....a good 'dodgey gig' les paul.

Re: Let me see your Edwards guitars

After reading the comments so far, I take it these have more in common with an MIK Schecter/PRS than they do with a USA Gibson/Hamer? I may be quickly approaching "meh" if so.

No. Definitely a step up from anything coming out of Korea. They are similar to a MIJ ESP production guitar in quality, but a bit cheesier on hardware and finish like a high end LTD. Especially the model you have posted. That faux yellow binding is horrible in person.

They are very good guitars, but IMO no longer worth the crapshoot and expense. When they were $900 tyd from Japan they were a great deal. For the same $ as they cost today, a new MIJ Tokai is a much better Les Paul. If resale is a factor for you, do not even think about it. As soon as you pull the trigger, you are looking at selling it for about 50% of what you bought it for. Whether Edwards, or Tokai, or Bacchus,.etc.

This is all VERY well stated!! They really are excellent guitars! Feel and play much like the real thing. But, They have the thick finish and glossy feel of an LTD or something. My LTD 1000 CTM is VERY similar to the Edwards Sykes I had in build and feel and all. Both are great guitars. I also have a Burny LP that was built in the 80's.. That one shares the glossy finish of the Edwards and LTD (unlike nitro on the gibby), but the Burny is about 12 lbs, solid as an anchor and has all the feel and tone of the real deal. It sustains like a mofo. Just a slighty different breed.
Bottom line, all are very good. If you are the type that is caught up on names and if you know that everytime you look down, you sold yourself short, then skip.
If you want an LP style of guitar that plays great, sounds great, has more "gloss" to it and will smile knowing you paid less, then go for it!

here is the edwards:

Here is the Burny, just for reference:

Re: Let me see your Edwards guitars

The one I posted is finished in nitro, not poly or nitro-over-poly like the LP-9X series models. I don't care what name is on the headstock, but since I'd have to buy this sight-unseen and have never played an Edwards before, resale is obviously a consideration.

Re: Let me see your Edwards guitars

Roll of the dice, bro. If resale is a concern, find a used Les Paul traditional, or if you need the Tuxedo, find a Heritage 157.

Re: Let me see your Edwards guitars

I've gone round and round with this same thing before. In the end I decided that when I can get a Les Paul, it will be a Gibson, but USED. I will not buy new. Prices are just too high for my wallet. I like the Studio's but I prefer the body binding and appointments that the Studio's do not have. One of my buddies has a Trad Pro that he says he's holding because he knows I'm interested in it (you know about this one, Jeff).

Re: Let me see your Edwards guitars

No longer own them, but they were greats guitar. Sounded Les Paul, but was more trebly and not as thick and big sounding as the real deal, not sure why. I sold them and am sticking with my '78 Custom. But that's because I can afford it. If on a budget I think the Edwards is a great alternative.

I did know that.

Because I wanted to.

I've own lots of USA, vintage, and cheap imports. At least two of each in my current collection right now. And vintage isn't always better (usually, but not always)
