Let me see your oddballs

Re: Let me see your oddballs

I have a SUNN Alpha 212R that I still use when I play out. I had to replace the speakers as they were kind of shot after many decades of use. This one was made in 1977.

I have a Univox copy of a Fender Bassman. I like this one better since it has a mid control. It's called the Univox 1051.

Re: Let me see your oddballs

I love odd ball amps. Everything from 60's and 70s department store solid states to failed startup amp companies. I think the weirdest amp I ever owned (and I miss it) was my Oliver Powerflex 502. It was a tube amp with one 15 inch speaker and the head rose out of the cabinet via a switch. Man I miss that amp.

Please fill this thread with amp weirdness - stuff you have owned, currently have or GAS for.

Re: Let me see your oddballs

I am too shy to show you my Odd Balls but here is an old Canandian Amp circa 1970.
2 - 4x10 80wt slave cabs and a Guitar driver.
The designer now works for Yorkville Sound making Traynors I believe.

Speaking of all the cool coverings on these things, did you guys know Lee figured out some way to powdercoat WOOD? It's tough as nails but it's hideous, in person.
Duracoat or Cerakote maybe?

That's actually a cool idea. They both, along with Gunkote, make great gun coatings... I wonder if it would work for a guitar?? OFF TO GOOGLE!

I guess this is kind of odd. It is an early 70's Randell solid state. It is 4x10 and 200 watts it has awesome cleans.

Re: Let me see your oddballs

That is killer !! Does it grind when you dime the volume?

I haven't actually "dimed" it yet. I wanted to be gentle with them old speakers, 'cause this thing is 50/60-something years old.

I might try it though. ;)

Re: Let me see your oddballs

My Boombox Cielo. JMP clone with inputs internally jumpered, power scaling, and tube reverb. 2xEL34, solid state rectifier. Great 70s rock machine!

Re: Let me see your oddballs

Miss this bad boy. Lee Jackson XLS-1000 half stack. Had a knob that just said "more". How cool is that???

The Three Amigos! Still have the Vox Student and the Univox U-45 B. Sold the Champ. Wish I didn't. The big bugger on the bottom is a 59 Bassman clone with a 2X12 cab. Was VERY cool. Miss that as well. Sounded unbelievable with the Carl Martin Plexitone pedal.

My 71 Univox U-1245 B. A bit odd because the panel behind the knobs is black. They're usually blue. I think the knobs may not be original

These aren't mine, but oh so many times I could have bought a halfstack for around six or seven hundred bucks. The Marshall Orange Crunch. 100 made. Basically a JCM-2000 with orange tolex.

Re: Let me see your oddballs

How about a Vox Lil' Night Train atop of a Quantum 4X6 cab atop of a Fender Vibro Champ with a 10 inch speaker mod.
How about a Peavey Futura rack mount 12 inch speaker cab loaded with a Peavey 12 inch 8 ohm Black Widow speaker atop of an Art SGX-2000 Express atop of a Mesa Boogie M190 audiophile all tube 180 watt monoblock power amp for a rack rig.
Yep.......things are really different around here.

Re: Let me see your oddballs

I had that same Quantum cab when I was just starting out!
I had the head, too. :)

The Quantum cab has been loaded with 2 6 inch vintage Jensen Alnico speakers, one unidentified 6 inch Alnico speaker and one 6 inch Eminence all 4 ohm speakers wired in series for a near 16 ohm impedence. Sounds excellent. The Vox Lil' Night Train output tube was changed to an NOS 12BH7.

Re: Let me see your oddballs

I love my Gibson GA-5 Les Paul ReIssue. It has an upgraded Speaker, a JENSEN P8R 25W, and all of the caps have been upgraded, along with several other well-known mods. It does everything that I need from a Practice/Small Gig Amp. Plus if it's good enough for Billy Gibbons who am I to refuse it's charm and awesome tone? This amp will be in my bedroom when I am ready to check out.
