Let the LED OUT!!! Insights please

My god guys ive seen the light! I was never a big old school fan of music...

well here goes the story and then my gear question

For my university class.....yes i said university class, i am in this class where we listen to rock tunes and then memorize the date and artist its a bird course kind off. But to be honest i was kind of disliking it alot becasue he mianly plays to us 1950 tracks which all sound the same. Until he played us a led zeppelin track....Communication Breakdown...... and it was awesome. Pages guitar solos are nuts, and i love the tone! Even if it was only a taste of Zeppelin im hooked. Its awesome, yes i still like my pop punk bands and all, but wow this stuff is refreshing for me. Anyways on to gear

My gear is crap, i dont even own a decent amp...a ten watt practice amp made my marshall and a MIM fender strat with a hot rail in the bridge with heavy bottom and skinny top ernieball strings.

How would i be able to nail that class vintage tone without truly breaking the bank? I was thinking for pick ups i would switch out my hotrails for maybe a full 59 trembucker in the bridge and have them route my guitar for it? For Amps im only gonna go with a combo amp i cant affrod a stack of any kind. What Amp would i need? I would prefer them to be marshall or mesa boogie of course with tubes. And for my strings would i need to take on a lighter gauge of strings inorder to be able to play that fast and accurately? What about picks? I use tortex .60 right now but should i use a thicker pick in order to solo better?

Communication Breakdown was actully recorded with a Tele and a little
Supro amp. The classic Jimmy Page gear is a Les Paul into a Marshall.
With a Lil' 59er in your Strat and a desent tube amp you should get
close to jimmy's tone. I wouldn't carve up that strat for a full size HB.
Alot of Jimmy's playing is just pure atitude. If you listen to Zep I and
than Zep II . The tone is a little better on II but the playing is great
on both albums. And he used totally different gear !!.

john john is right, play anything on your strat with the hotrails and the little amp. when you can afford it get a better amp then maybe another guitar.

Some of the zep stuff was played on a 59 tele with stock single coils, and it sounds like a les paul. It really was all in the riffs. learn those riffs and keep going. that era was a gold mine for tone imo. Have fun with that class, it should get really interesting.

Ya definately once we hit the 1960's its going to be awesome, Im already getting a taste of the music. When we get tot he 70's its gonna be fun, let not even talk aboutt he 80's! HAir metal! And of course 1990's will be fun too, since i will know all of the songs from that era. Maybe your right guys, but i do think i need a new amp regardless, i might leave my guitar as it is, but i do need a new amp, for the sake of being able to play with people.

Re: Let the LED OUT!!! Insights please

well then get a new amp when you can. a nice marshall or fender combo will do well

Re: Let the LED OUT!!! Insights please

just been going all evening with a MIM strat (lil '59 bridge, HR neck) and a DSL 401 to the led zep remasters album :laugh2:

coincidence.... still, lovely vintage voice on the lil '59. i stagger the screws like fender stagger their polepeices.

Welcome to the club! I'm a Zepplin nut. Wife bought me the box set of all of the studio recordings they've ever done and I listen to it a lot. Its pretty nice because its not a greatest hits collection, its all the albums in the order they were recorded.

As far as tone it will be hard to nail every Zepplin tone. Jimmy used different guitars, amps, and was a master of the studio and getting different sounds. Recommendations here will probably get ya close. Lots of his solos were done using a Tele too.
