Let's See Those Budget Studio Desks

Re: Let's See Those Budget Studio Desks

Currently I am using a folding table...just fits perfectly in my small space.

Oak tops fabricated and test-fitted. Tomorrow, the finishing begins.

Let's See Those Budget Studio Desks

While I was waiting for the stain on the tops to dry this afternoon, I got bored and made this video:

Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and in the 70s, so it will be a perfect day to slap several coats of poly on the tops, and call these babies DONE.

Holy crap, it works! I moved my music gear around tonight and set up the speakers on the new stands, thusly:

Then, while getting Sunday's photos of my daughter's horse show off the camera and up onto Facebook, I listened to the Bing Lounge live show by The FIXX on YouTube. At one point, I was watching the video and suddenly realized that Cy's voice was coming from a spot a couple inches behind my computer display, right where he appeared on the screen. I guess all this crap about speaker placement and imaging really works.

No more procrastinating... I think it's time to remix those old 4-tracks from the '80s.

Looks great! Be careful of the speakers being that close to the wall (and windows!) while mixing. Bass may be perceived very differently. This is a constant struggle of mine as I am always in a confined space pushed up against the wall, fortunately my monitors have room control settings to help combat this, but fair warning for when you go listen in the car and things sound weird down there!

That's particularly an issue if the speakers are rear-ported. Also with the non-carpeted floor additional foam or soft material may be needed under the speakers to reduce coupling.

Re: Let's See Those Budget Studio Desks

The positions shown are the normal, "family room" arrangement. When I do any real mixing, I can slide the whole operation away from the wall, since I'm keeping the area behind my chair open.

Re: Let's See Those Budget Studio Desks

Unless you can pull it out to 1/3 the depth of the room, moving them away from the wall may actually be worse. Also, try to avoid the distance from speaker to side walls and distance to rear wall from being multiples of each other. That is bad mojo. :)

Symmetry is great for living spaces, not so much for audio spaces...
