Lets See Those Charvels - Old and Young

Lets See Those Charvels - Old and Young

I definitely need something like this

I'd get H/S with maple fretboard and in an Eighties neon colour! ;)

Re: Lets See Those Charvels - Old and Young

My first guitar. 1987. That's a Dimarzio Super Distortion in there. Right now it has a set of EMG H3s in it.

I'll most likely put the Super Distortion back and throw my Evolution in the neck.

Re: Lets See Those Charvels - Old and Young

This thread rules. I have no pictorial contribution - since I recently sold my Pro Mod San Dimas Hardtail - but I just have a question and a comment.

What's the neck profile like on those old Charvel Models? Medium/skinny/chunky C/D/etc.?

Also, I recently played the Pro Mod DeMartini sig in a store, and it awesome. Raw neck, tone-alicious Quarter Pound in the neck, top-mounted Floyd, just one knob - only thing stopping me, really, was the snakeskin graphic. If that guitar came in normal production colors, it would be *the* dominant 80s throwback superstrat out there, specially since BC Rich seems to have discontinued the Gunslinger.

Others may disagree but I would put the 80's Charvels as having a neck that is in between an Ibanez Wizard and Fender Standard Thin C. The old Charvels are pretty thin to my tastes but not as thin as the Wizard stuff by Ibanez.

I love Snakeskin but prefer the real Python Leather, no graphic for me! lol

Well I can only speak for the Model and Classic Series from the 80's/ Early 90's (sorry no experience with 80's USA Charvels), but the necks are nothing like the Pro Mods. They are similar to what Jackson ended up with. Slim, but not quite wizard like...VERY comfortable. My 2 Model series are almost identical, and my 375 Deluxe is a little more rounded, but same ballpark.

I am looking for a ProMod MIJ neck as well so I can make my slime green, single slanted hum axe

Re: Lets See Those Charvels - Old and Young

yeah, necks were comfortably thin. not like wizards. About like one of the thinnest strat necks youll find. Very comfy, but not quite as nice as the oiled necks with the compound radius obviously

I'm in the process of refinishing/rebuilding a Model 4 (the elusive midnight blue metallic, that some @#$@# sanded off), with the Kahler bridge... I'm planning on putting EMGs (SA/SA/85) into it.

Any pics of the process so far? :D

I had a MIM Strat that some kid tried to strip the paint...literally used a belt sander. :smash: Turned into a cool relic project but was a shame–Lake Placid Blue and great tone (after upgraded pickups and electronics)

Re: Lets See Those Charvels - Old and Young

I might have a couple. Let me see if I can find the pictures.

Re: Lets See Those Charvels - Old and Young

I didn't have my Slime Green San Dimas when this pic was taken. I'll try and take a pic of it later and post it.

You don't care for Maple boards do ya?
Well, I went from playing nothing but Gibsons for 12 years or so to them. I'll play anything really, but I like the hardness of the maple boards, and their attack. I just kind of switched my whole way of playing around a few years ago, and I like it.

I have a love/hate relationship with Maple boards–working on a Musikraft Tele (well, Thane will be working on it lol) right now with a 1 piece roasted quartersawn Maple neck...miss the snappy attack of a Maple neck especially on chords.

We gotta get together and jam the next time I'm up in Nashville.

Re: Lets See Those Charvels - Old and Young

. Sometime a guitar has to evolve as a player, and I think I did that when I switched to the Charvels. However, most people do it the other way. They go from Charvels, and the like, to Gibsons. I did it the other way....lol

I hear ya man, I went from Charvels/Jacksons to Gibsons to Fenders and now Warmoths/Musikrafts lol Using the Pro Mod profile on my guitars going forward...so still a Charvelish influence lol
