Currently this is my only 7 string guitar. The DiMarzio X2N just sounds brutal. Had a Jackson Dinky before this one and a LTD M, but this Gio RG is much better. Been meaning to get a different neck pickup but not sure I will because I rarely use the neck pickup on this guitar...

I don't have a 7 but have been kinda eyeing this one. I mean, pelhamish blue with maple? C'mon. Aren't they like $250? I can imagine the X2N blows holes in walls!

My ideal 7 would be something like the AZ in HSS that was new last year (AZ 24047). There's also the Vola OZ 7 RV.. It's kinda hard to find 7s with lower output pups and non-locking trems (in the more wallet friendly bracket in particular), almost everything is either Floyd/hardtail with hotter (active or passive) pups.

Some of the older Ibanez models like the 7620 (a classic) and 1077XL are pretty sweet too.

Maybe I should get that Gio and do a conversion :D.

^ The color is metallic light blue. If you're looking for the best 7 in this price range this guitar is it. I've owned all the others available that's around the same price point. This guitar just needs better pickups. Tuners are fine. I got mine for $200 before the price increase, but still for $250 it is still worth it. Would recommend.

Back in 1998 when they released I passed on a RG7620 in Vampire Kiss Red. Still regret not buying it then. They pop up used often but can be expensive and sometimes not in the best shape. I will get one eventually.

^^ Absolutely. VK is the one, though there was also a cool silverburst for some production years. Hah, totally agree about current prices vs condition of some examples you come across. One of my guitar teachers back in the day had a dark blue one, very nice axe. It has all the right stuff - workhorse 7 string mien, Japanese build quality, DiMarzios, Lo Pro trem.

Had a mate who owned a 2027X - pretty heavy but a fantastic guitar, and piezo gives further sonic possibilities.

Good to know about the Gio, kinda confirms what I thought about it – basically interested in a solid base (decent fit, finish and build quality), stuff like pups and hardware is a non-issue.
