Ive been playing through combos my whole life. Im starting to convince my self that i deserve to own a half stack.:naughty: what are the basics i should know about Cabinets. Why do some cost less than others. how does build quality effect tone. what should i look for?

Re: lets talk 4x12

Any good company like marshall, bogner, splawn will make a good cab with solid wood and speakers. When you get into speaker cabs is where the money lies. If you get a regular marshall 1960 4x12 its not much but once you get the ones with the vintage 30s or even the greenbacks, which I am saving up for, the price escalates ever so quickly.

Re: lets talk 4x12

is it the wood that they use that makes cheap marshall cabs cheap? like i saw one for like 250 and it was for the mg seriese. why is that one less expensive?

Re: lets talk 4x12

If your getting a marshall 4x12 get a 1960B or even A. A's are the slanted tops and B's are the bottoms. The B's have better tone some people say. I'm not familiar with the MG's....you cant go wrong with a 1960A or B. One should run you around 4hundred or so.

Re: lets talk 4x12

between the A and B? The A's are slanted so the top 2 speakers are facing up while in the B's all 4 speakers are facing the same direction. It sounds a bit more focused so to speak.

Re: lets talk 4x12

Keep in mind you're not going to get the same tone out of a half stack (or a 2x12 or any sealed cab for that matter) as you would out of a combo.

Do you have the opportunity to try stuff out?

With as much stuff as inexpensively available as there is these days you might want to see what's available and what actually works for you. Both the guitar players in my last band picked up those cheap H&K Vortex half stacks. They sounded pretty good with themselves- the head and the cab matched well. But the cab sounded like complete ass with my Marshall though.

YMMV.

+1 To Avatar..they Use Quality Birch-Ply...the best(tonally) construction methods for a cabinet is using Russian Birch-Ply....or Void-Free Birch-Ply..
@ Least to MY ears:P

Re: lets talk 4x12

Keep in mind that they are usually closed back and very directional. You can't dial in just standing in front of the cab, cause what you hear is way different than what someone standing even as little as 10 feet away hears.

I've got a Marshall 1960ax. Its greenback loaded, and to my ears sounds much better than just the regular 1960a. Not to mention it looks the tits too!

Comparing a Marshall 4x12 to a Splawn or Bogner is insulting to the latter two.

Bogner, Splawn, Mesa, Orange, and VHT are pretty the best 4x12's around.

I say play em first. First off, if you like the open back sound that will rule out alot of 4x12 cabs. Second, make sure they fit in your car.

I couldn't disagree more. I tried an Orange, a Bogner, a Mesa and a Marshall when I was buying, and to my ears, the Marshall sounded every bit as good as the others, for a lot less money.

Re: lets talk 4x12

How do i know if i wont like the closed back sound? or rather would it be a world of difference or just different but still awesome?

It's different. Low end is stronger, more focused. It IS great, although some styles may lend themselves better to an open back sound. Try one out at a local store, you'll hear the difference.

+1 to Avatar from me also. The Carvin Legacy series 4x12s are excellent values also, if you like Vintage 30 spkrs.
