Let's talk about stacked humbuckers...

This guitar will be needing stacked humbuckers:

Right now she has some custom wound Alnico2 singles and the hum is killing me. Humfree singlecoils is what she wants.
Only bridge and neck - I never use the middle position.
Due to optical reasons no side-by-side rails or duckbuckers.
Has to have the traditional look.
Something that rocks.

From their description, I was thinling about a DiMarzio '54 Pro (neck) and Heavy Blues 2 (bridge). Anyone tried those? Any other models you can recommend?

Re: Let's talk about stacked humbuckers...

do you mean stacked humbuckers like a single coil sized jb or just humless singles? or am i missing something?

Re: Let's talk about stacked humbuckers...

You know - like the DiMarzio HS-3 or the Duncan Classic Stack.
Humbuckers, that have the traditional look (look like singlecoils but are humbuckers) - they are stacked.

Re: Let's talk about stacked humbuckers...

DiMarzio Area '58 is what I have in the neck of my Strat.. I guess you are a Yngwie fan like I am ;) The '58 is quite similar to a HS-3, its just got more of that old 50s Strat sound, very fat and big.

For the bridge, I use a DiMarzio FS-1, but they are true single coils. I would look into a Virtual Vintage Solo or Virtual Vintage Solo Pro.

:)

I've got a Tele with the factory Pups in it. I like it, but it needs more bite. Will the little 59 Duncan do it for me? That's the stacked humbucker, right? Will I have to modify the cavity in the body? How much work am I looking at?

Re: Let's talk about stacked humbuckers...

What gave me away? :)
Haha the color of the Strat, pickup choice etc :)

But seriously, try a Area '58 in the neck, throug my JCM800 I get that old Icarus Dream Suite kinda sound :)

The little '59 is a side-by-side humbucker, not a stacked design.
As far as the tone of the little '59, I'm afraid I can't help you as I haven't tried one myself. I'll let the others talk about tone.
It should fit your Tele without modifications

Cool! I had tried the Area 58 in a Swamp Ash Strat before but it was way too bright in that guitar.
You say it sounds fat in your guitar? If it gets that Icarus Dream Suite sound - I definitely will have to try it again.

Re: Let's talk about stacked humbuckers...

Yeah, I already got the HS-3, YJM & YJM combo stock in my Sonic Blue Yngwie Strat. Just wanted something different for this one

It probably be best to start a new thread w/your question, and detail your musical style(s) and amps used. You'll get more info if your question is its own thread. :)

Then go for the Duncan Classic Stack Plus pickups. They sound just like the stock pickups in my '63 Strat only they are hum-free and the bridge pickup is calibrated and wound slightly hotter than the neck and middle so it doesn't sound weak and thin like the bridge pickup in my '63 Strat does. Lew

I have them in my alder Strat. I do think my rosewood fretboard balances it out abit. But I got a very fluid fat sustain with this. Also sounds great clean :)

Re: Let's talk about stacked humbuckers...

Cool! What pot values for tone and volume are you using with the Area58? Are you using "sound-fattening" capacitors as well (like Jensens)?

Re: Let's talk about stacked humbuckers...

Hmm, just the stock stuff. Must be 250k pots in this thing :) No capacitators I think, the only thing is that instead of the lower tone knob being set for the middle, its wired to the bridge pickup instead.

:)

Re: Let's talk about stacked humbuckers...

You know how it is - push your guitar through a high gain amp for Yngwie stuff (or a DOD 250 pedal and a Marshall) and you can shield and ground as much as you like - there will still be hum.
Only humbuckers deliver

Re: Let's talk about stacked humbuckers...

try the Dimarzio Chopper/Cruiser bridge(In the middle)/Cruiser bridge(In the NecK)

Like the HS3 set only 10 times louder
