Let's talk clean tones!

I'm normally into the whole extreme overdrive lead tone thing, but yesterday, I plugged in my Epi Korina Explorer, switched to the neck pup, rolled the volume knob down to almost NOTHING and set my ME-50 to a reverb-y, classic clean. WOW! Tone heaven! It was such a joy to solo with! I used to mainly use cleans to reveal all the mistakes in my playing and just really help me improve my technique, but now, it's my new "THE TONE" (the not-distorted one anyway :) ) I played a lot of Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin with it, it was soo cool. I even played some Iron Maiden with it and it sounded kinda groovy! :saeek: To me, it was 60% touch sensitivity and 40% incredible clarity.

Sooo....has anyone else here felt the wrath of divine cleans that rocked both rhythm and lead duties?

Re: Let's talk clean tones!

Its only once in a blue moon that I use distortion anymore. Different flavors of "clean" is what I love hearing. Mind you, I love dirty in the right hands - Beck, Hendrix, Satch, etc. But for my own playing, I find myself "examining" the guitar and pup, as much as listening to the tune I'm playing.

Besides, once I turn on the "dirt", most of my guitars/pups sound the same. ;)

Re: Let's talk clean tones!

+1 to what the Artman said.

I use gain only about 15-20% of the time. Touch sensitive "edge of break-up" clean is my Bad motherfu6ker.

Re: Let's talk clean tones!

pssh! I didn't say mother****er! I said motherfu6ker. :D

Re: Let's talk clean tones!

I almost exclusively play clean.

The only pedals I own are an overdrive & a wah....I've got a multi-effects unit, but it rarely gets used.

Mainly, it's Tele into a Hiwatt or the P-90 Goldtop into a Mesa Boogie Blue Angel 4x10

Keeps me humble & honest!!!!

Re: Let's talk clean tones!

Kinda funny story I'd like to share with Biu...

Yesterday at my band's practice, we were pissing off my singer by playing American Idiot by Green Day and me singing it like over and over. In the middle of playing our originals we'd break into American Idiot. It was hella funny. Anyways, I started playing American Idiot clean and really slow to piss of my singer. then my bassist said "it's the Lounge version of American Idiot!" So then, I start playing around with G#, C#whatever, and D# chords... well my singer like the progression so he said "Hey, let's write a song like that!"

I ran upstairs and got my weird Epiphone 30watt acoustic amp from like the 70's (I love this amp so much for the clean tone it gets) and now we have this sweet new lounge music style song. Not to mention, I wrote this deisel-ass outro solo.

Right about now, I'm in a state of cleans-euphoria. I REALLY want to record the sound that this amp gets to let you hear it.

thats my story and I'm stickin' to it.

One of the things interesting about this statement, is that it mimicks my own situation with my Yamaha FX-500 and my J-Station. Together, these two units offer me about a million different settings. I have the J "tweaked" to that one perfect tone, (Blackface clone), and the Yamaha tweaked to three different settings that I alternate between with a footpedal. (Two of which are "clean".)

And thats how they stay. ;)

Re: Let's talk clean tones!

bah cleans are for wussies. you need a shattering wall of UNHOLY METAL TONE :D

LOL
playing clean once in a while is extreme fun

Re: Let's talk clean tones!

HAHAH! I find it ironic that a thread about CLEAN TONES lead to the excessive use of sneaking mother****er through the autocensor!!! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: That is one professional thread hijacking!

But yeah, clean is like my new best friend. Well, more of a back-up friend should I manage to piss off my good buddy, overdrive :)

Puckboy, is that Blue Angel still treating you good?

As for me, 90 percent of my gig is clean. Clean and on the edge of breakup is where I live. Most of my soloing is done with a clean tone. my vibrolux is quite a fat clean, which helps.

Oh yeah....best move I think I've made. The P-90s match it perfectly.

I wanna figure out recording & get some clips up of this combo......very well kept secret & I thank you again!!!! :beerchug:

Re: Let's talk clean tones!

For cleans, I like sitting where I can pick clean and dirty at once. That right on the verge level where picking dynamics can hold your sound clean, or send you over the edge.

I also like being pure clean, but unless you're bi-amping, it's hard to balance the volume if you're switching between clean and dirty that way.
