Re: Let's talk Les Pauls and TOKIA's.

Isn't there a LP Studio that could be found in your budget? Get the real thing without any of the rest of the hangups.

Ive got a gibson 50s tribute w/emgs gathering dust (bought solely for resale, waiting on final installment of payment from its future owner fortunately - cuz its a POS)... Cant hold a candle in ANY aspect to either my 6x cheaper 70s mij westminster custom OR my 2x cheaper 90s esp eclipse

Most good japs are at least of modern Gibson Standard level, and often muuuuuch nicer

Re: Let's talk Les Pauls and TOKIA's.

Why not get someone in Pretoria to check it out for you? (I take it you're in CPT?) Plenty of forum dudes would help you out... If it doesn't get sold, the price will drop in a while and maybe you can snatch it up then :)

I wish . . . i am stuck in P.E.

Re: Let's talk Les Pauls and TOKIA's.

I am looking for my 1st LP-shaped guitar and have (by default) always looked at Gibsons.

Now, there is a used/2nd hand Tokai LS 92 that i can get.
Again, the seller is 13 hours car drive away from me, so it wil be a bought unplay'ed scenario.

This it the guitar in question : http://www.guitarforum.co.za/classifieds/?sa=view;id=3600

My budget right now is 1K max (...end of vacation you see)

How does this LS 92 compare to the 'budget' and studio Gibbo LP's ?
Does anyone have any experience with Tokai pick ups ?
Are they GOOD, or just 'OK' ?

Or do they NEED a Whole Lotta set :naughty:

PS : i had a Zakk Wylde Epi LP from 2005 - 2008.
GREAT neck and weight, but the rest of the guitar - no thanks.
Looked like a bloody dart board !!!

The link comes up as an empty page for me.

Not all MIJ Les Pauls are that great, but this one seems to be current production MIJ in poly. Can't see much wrong with it.

To be honest, LP Studios are spotty. There are many that are looking and sounding pretty bland, and fewer great ones. I would prefer the MIJ Tokai, even though the Gibson is nitro. But the random weight relief on the Gibson and possibly random fretboard material alone makes me go hummmm.

For the same money you could get a vintage MIJ LP but then you have to dig into the history of these things, they can be hard to identify. And you will not get a solid cap flame maple top.

Re: Let's talk Les Pauls and TOKIA's.

Might be also worth while to check out an older Greco or Burny, both MIJ and very similar to Tokai - all made in the Fujigen factory, just branded differently.

I think the "all" here is overstating things a bit.

There is also a serious problem with identification. The Burny brand in particular has been reused for non-MIJ production, making things even more difficult.

old Grecos were Matsumoku at first. Burny, was that ever Fujigen? Not sure...as to Tokai, not a fujigen brand at all.
