Lets talk neck pickups..

Ok: Guitar is mahagony body/ mahog neck. 1/4 in thick flame top, ebony board and a Floyd.
Im wanting to do something different than my usual C5 in bridge and 59 bridge in the neck position.

Im going with a Blues Trembucker in the bridge and need a neck pup. I originally decided on an Anico II pro for the neck. I have been working with Lew on this order and we are waiting on a back order for one.
I can go with : Waiting
Or and Alnico II bridge model
Or a Pearly Gates Bridge model

I have not used any of the above and really need your input. I play metal-blues and for the neck I like a sweet creamy tone that also cleans up well without getting brittle.

If you don't want to wait, I'd go with the AII bridge model. However, from everything I've heard, I don't think you'll be disappointed if you wait for the AII neck.

What do you all think about a Pearly Gates neck or Seth Lover neck and the Blues Saraceno bridge? How would those two compare to the AIIPro neck in your opinion? Brian originally asked for an AIIPro neck and the Blues. I have one in stock, but I've never actually heard the Blues Saraceno. Lew

The Pearly Gates should do well with the Blues in the bridge. Mind you, I've never heard them as a set, but the mids in the PG seem to match those in the Blues quite nicely. IMHO, I'm beginning to think that the APH is a bit too polite for rock when paired with a higher output 'bucker at the bridge (I have one paired with a CC). It does great for jazzy/"fiusiony" type things, though. :burnout:

You've mention the Seth on a couple of occasions. I see you run one in your Hamer. What is that like in the neck? Darn the choices. Makes it easy to always go with the 59b and C5.. haha

a pearly gates neck sounds like it would be a killer match for the blues. it seems like it would match power wise too.

I installed the Seth in my Hamer because it came with a nickel cover and the bridge CC already had a nickel cover and also because I had not tried the PGn at the time.

But the PGn seems a little more open and more articulate in the mids. I'd go for the PGn!

I could be wrong about this but this is how I picture it:

The Seth is sort of like an Antiquity but with a full strength magnet and matched coils.

The PG is sort of like an Antiquity but with a full strength magnet.

The Antiquity is sort of like a Seth but with unmatched coils and an aged magnet.

Am I right about this or wrong? You guys tell me what you think please.

Never tried the Ant., but I can see the comparo between the PG and the Seth. In a 335 style axe, the Seth kills, in my Paul, it was a bit too thick for my tastes.

Exactly. The Seth sounds thicker than the PG....which makes the PG a little clearer in a very good way for a neck pickup. Lew

I used to have a Blues Trembucker/Alnico 2 Pro set in my Wolfgang, and it was one of the better pickup combos I've tried. You'd probably like the Pearly Gates as well, it just depends on how bright of a tone you want from the neck pickup. The Pearly Gates will be brighter and less bassy, with more mids. The Alnico 2 Pro will be warmer and smoother with softer highs and a little more low end. I personally think this pickup has more mids than are shown in the tone chart. I think you could use an Alnico 2 Pro bridge model in the neck with no problem if you don't want to wait.
