Lets talk neck PU's

Re: Lets talk neck PU's

I really like a 59B in the neck with an A2 magnet. I found it out by accident! I wanted to try a dimarzio VHPAF in the bridge, but had no 'neck' humbucker laying around so in went the 59B. In the bridge it was a tad too thin and shrill, but that sucker is fat and singing in the neck. Have no need to switch, add to that it matches output wise PERFECTLY with a Suhr SSV+ in the bridge and I have one bangin instrument!

Funny side note... that 59 w/A2 in the neck made me go back to a PAFish bridge pickup... the openess and dynamics the 59 has just flat out kill any h.o. bucker... so an overwound PAFish thangamagiggy found it's way in my bridge....

Re: Lets talk neck PU's

I personally love the Jazz in my H-500, but I can see a lot of people here dislike it. I also love whatever the EMG LH-301 neck is modeled after, especially split.

Actually, I have thought about turning both knobs into push pull volumes, and leaving the neck p/up split [almost] always. Doubt I'll bother though.

My A2P sounds perfect to me, in my SG . . . and will stay there undtill the end of days !

Re: Lets talk neck PU's

seriously though, an a5 490r is a great pickup. i use one on the neck of my dot, and it's very much like a paf-type pickup. kinda like a '59, but with a more even EQ; less boomy, not as extended of highs, more mids.

Are you talking about the stock 490r? I found it boomy and muddy. Backing the pickup way down and raising the pole-pieces way-up helped a bit, but I ultimately ended up replacing it with a Seth, which later on got modified with an A5 magnet.

Re: Lets talk neck PU's

I was never big on neck humbuckers until I discovered Suhr SSV and DSV neck pickups. Very clear and articulate sounding....while retaining the warm tone that is so great about the neck position.

Re: Lets talk neck PU's

I just changed both pick ups in my LP std and finally I think I'm there. I had a Brobucker/Seth combo... great sound if a little thin in this guitar as it's somewhat bright. So last night a decided to mess around again. I know C5's get alot of praise so I swapped the ceramic mag for an A5, so bridge sorted. I tried a PGn a while back and I hated it... don't know why but I did. So After listening to alot of advice from Blueman I decided to swap the A2 for an A4.... WOW. Killer neck pick up for this guitar, smooth fat and clear. It really pairs up well with the C5... so as it's a page LP it looks how it should now, I debranded the bridge C5 and stuck an old and genuinely aged nickle cover on the PGn... it's all good!

Re: Lets talk neck PU's

I use a 59b in several guitars. I like the little bit of edge I get for soloing and stuff over the regular 59n. the 59b is prob what I have the most of.

4) For something a bit more advanced, there's Artie's de-mudder circuit. I'll let him explain if he's still out there.
It's basically a rather clever high-pass filter. Still, ISTR his saying the JazzN did the same thing, only better, but I hope I'm hallucinating that memory. lol

Howdy,

Yes, the '59 in the neck position of my ES-335 is a bit boomy; it's not perfect. Eva Mendez isn't perfect, either! ;) Seriously, the '59 set in my ES-335 is a big improvement over the stock "Dirty Fingers".

i never cared for the stock 490r, it was very mushy without much top end definition, especially in my SG faded. most of the problems i found it to have were cured with an a5 magnet. the pickup currently resides in the neck of my dot studio, along with the 490t with an a8 magnet in the bridge.
