Lets talk straplocks a moment..

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

Strinberg Straplocks, also branded as hennessy strap locks, they pretty much work the same as fender straplocks (the non schaller ones), are pretty solid, need minimal maintenance, protrude very little and are quite cheap, plus they also come in a couple colors like red and blue, so you can match them to a guitar

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

Used to use Schallers...got sick of the squeaking noise...got tired of having to re-tighten them every night...dropped more than one guitar using them...

Switched to Dunlops...liked them better...the ball bearings in the locks fell out of a set one night causing me to drop a guitar...

Went old school...switched to the leather locks that sandwich thstrap between 2 small pieces of leather...Loved those but it was hard to fit some guitars in their cases with those type locks.

Went to rubber cap washers (like for beer, etc) and conventional strap buttons...couldn't be happier...straps stay put, no noise, haven't dropped a guitar yet, everything fits in the case and best of all they are dirt cheep.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

So with the Grolsch washers, you need a screwdriver to take the strap off the guitar?

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

I 2 use the Grolsch red bottle washers, but they do stretch/wear out eventually after not too long. I have Schallers on one guitar- I don't gig, so they haven't had an issue, but they are big and clumsy. I have one of those pairs of the leather ones, but have not used them yet.

Sir Bacon; Unless u got ladyfingers, you can stretch the rubber Grolsch over strap buttons. I use oversized Jackson strap buttons on about all my guitars, and I am able to stretch, with some difficulty, the Grolsch red washers over those strap buttons; that one-two punch works very well for moi.

I'm going to start using wire ties on mine.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

well, before i bought straplocks i used something even more secure than the grolsch washers, solid steel washers, like no possible way for the strap to come out ever

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

Love the old school folded leather ones, but now with as many guitars as I have I find it easier to just use locking straps on most of them. I was buying the Planet Waves ones, but had some issues with heavier LPs the upper bout the angle of the button to the strap would cause it to start prying the lock off the button, and also wearing the finish off the guitar. So now I've been using the Ernie Ball locking Straps and so far so good.

I've used steel washers too!
You know, you'd think by now there wouldn't have to be 20 ways to secure a strap to a guitar. I would think a recessed mechanism might be the best solution, an it would look the best, too. It is amazing to me that guitars are still sold with basic strap pins, and some sort of lock isn't a standard thing.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

What are you guys doing that makes the Schallers loosen up? I put them on a leather strap close to 10 years ago and they've never come loose. No thread locker or nail polish.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

yeah. nah.
not as good. they catch and are generally annoying. They are also slightly different to real schallers, so using a schaller lock on a knock off button (or vice versa) is annoying and you have to fumble with it to get the strap off. Crappy. Not worth saving a few bucks. Get the real ones.

I much prefer schallers to dunlops, but that is only personal pref. I have both.
Don't know about those numbers tho...446 or 447 etc. I just bought a new set coincidentally and looking at the packaging there is no mention of a number. It just says "schaller security locks".
Last thing...one small issue with schallers is that the nut needs to be tight or it can potentially unscrew. I just crank em up and add a drop of clear nail polish so they lock. Job done.

Yeah, another reason I like Dunlops. Had the nut come loose when Ive used Schallers

Another thing Jackson and the old model series Charvels had right is those big buttons. Well, if the Grohlsch washers wear out, sounds like a good excuse to partake of a couple of bottles..
(providing the sell it in your area..)

Or better yet.. EVH it and just screw a huge metal loop thing into the guit

I barely even used mine and had to tighten the nut

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

Maybe our methods of tightening hex nuts just aren't up to par.

I've got to say that more and more straps have thicker leather ends (e.g. Soldier) and the Schaller doesn't have a long enough barrel to get good clearance - so the nut only has a couple of turns before it bottoms out. If they were to add 1/16 of an inch to the barrel, it would be fine.

On the other end of the scale, I was tightening a Schaller once, and it got so tight, it clean ripped the barrel off the base. But then, I do have Popeye-ish forearms...

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

Lay off the spinach when working on guitars Vince!!!

Yes, think you are exactly correct! my strap ends were thick, so couldnt thread the nut way down. One strap was so thick, I had to mash it some with pliers to get the nut to make contact with the threads. Even then, I had a heckuva time getting it to thread on.

Re: Lets talk straplocks a moment..

Red Alert on the Grolsch Straplocks.;

With this thread I was reminded I did not have anymore Grolsch Washers, so I scoured ebeay, and found some. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME ANYMORE AS THE GOOD OLD ONES!;

The only ones I could find and ordered are these washed out rubbery looking stuff that stretches far too easily and looks and performs nothing like the dark red ones I have always bought before that have a much higher resiliancy, if that is the word- anyway, the old ones fit much tighter and are much harder to stretch. Do not waste your cash on these- I've a good mind to send them back ( and even if my mind ain't so good no more, I still might send them back!);

They have THESE "new improved " ones, which looks like they would suck;

But it looks like this guy from Canada, who I think I got my last good dark red Silicone ones, is selling the good ones still?;

I'll order some from him and let you know.
