Lew....Recap..Surfer Middle W Texas Hot Bridge

Lew...When you and I spoke together the other day,you told me that you do have hum in the bridge/middle position with the Texas Hot in the bridge and the middle Surfer right?

You also said that you had to flip flop the white and black wires on the Texas Hot bridge?

I'd love to try the Texas Hot bridge with the 2 Surfers, but I'm not keen on having the hum in that position..Is there a fix for that with the Surfer middle?

Re: Lew....Recap..Surfer Middle W Texas Hot Bridge

No. What I said was:

When combining the Antiquity Surfer neck and middle pickups with the Antiquity Texas Hot Custom bridge I had to use the middle Surfer as a neck pickup and and the neck Surfer as a middle pickup. I also had to reverse the black and white leads on the Texas Hot Custom bridge pickup only.

After doing that, I DO have humcancelling when the neck and middle are combined and when the bridge and middle are combined.

Since the neck and middle Surfers are sold individually and since they all have differant DC Resistance, it was easy for me to put together a set that worked beautifully when I used a RW/RP Surfer middle as a neck pickup and vice versa.

I know Gearjonser didn't care for the Texas Hot Custom bridge pickup with the Surfers, but I love it!

That set is now in my very favorite Strat...

Lew....So if I buy the Texas Hot bridge from you,all I need to do then is just flip flop the Texas Hot white and black? I leave the Middle Surfer pickup as is and I'll have no hum in the 4th position? That's what I'm looking for buddy...

Re: Lew....Recap..Surfer Middle W Texas Hot Bridge

Lew....Oh ok....I re-read your info....I'd have to switch the neck and middle Surfers also..Gotcha now....LOL

Re: Lew....Recap..Surfer Middle W Texas Hot Bridge

If you do what you just said, everything will be in proper phase and if you use the Blender pot so you can combine the neck and bridge pickups, you'll have humcancelling when you combine the neck and bridge pickups and neck and middle pickups but no humcancelling when you combine the middle pickup with the bridge pickup.

In order to have humcancelling when you combine the middle pickup with either the neck or bridge pickup, you'll need to put your middle Surfer where the neck pickup is now and vice versa.

Re: Lew....Recap..Surfer Middle W Texas Hot Bridge

I ran into problems too, but I could swear all I had to do was flip the leads on the bridge. I don't remember having to swap the neck and middle, and my 2nd position is humcancelling as it should be. I didn't dislike the Ant I Custom, but my ears are so used to Alnico 5 that the plucky sound of the A-2 Ant I Custom just sounds too different than the other two. Instead of buying another single, I just moved my Surfers over to my H-S-S strat with a trem C-5. I realize that definitely sounds different, but I love the fact that I can go from Hendrix clean to hard rock in the same guitar. I love the Surfers so much, that I may get another set, only this time with the Ant II Custom bridge.

Re: Lew....Recap..Surfer Middle W Texas Hot Bridge

GJ couldn't agree more. I find the custom I to be too round. Don't get me wrong, my buddy John here loves them and that says they are definitely good pickups. But like you I am an a5 man when it comes to strat s/c's.

I have a fralin baseplate installed for my ant I custom (10.00K), makes it more a5 like. So don't go wasting yours before trying that out. ;)

Re: Lew....Recap..Surfer Middle W Texas Hot Bridge

This is getting a little redundant, but I want to get it across right.

I have a full set of Surfers in one Strat and a set of Surfers with the Texas Hot Custom bridge pickup in another Strat. I love playing both sets.

1) If you put together a mixed set of n & m Surfers and a Texas Hot Custom bridge you will have to reverse the black and white wires on the Texas Hot Custom bridge...but only the bridge pickup. Otherwise the bridge pickup will be out of phase when combined with the middle pickup or neck pickup.

2) You will always have humcancelling when the neck & rw/rp middle pickups are combined.

3) HOWEVER, you will not have humcancelling when the middle and bridge pickup are combined.

4) To correct that swap the positions of the neck and middle pickups: Install the middle Surfer pickup in the neck slot and install the neck Surfer pickup in the middle slot.

5) Now you will have ham-cancelling when the "middle" pickup is combined with the "neck" pickup or the bridge pickup.

Trust me!

And this is ONLY if you are putting togther a mixed set of Surfer neck and middle and Texas Hot Custom bridge pickups.

I still didn't get it perfect tho...what is "ham-cancelling"? I guess it's for vegetarian guitar players....
