Lexicon Omega Users: Opinions, Experiences

I've been occasionally using my friends Lexicon Omega for mic recording. That was on a Mac back then. Currently using a PC. One XP and one Win8 (which I haven't tried yet). I don't have the ProTools LE disk that came bundled.

My main problem is getting it to recognize in Reaper correctly. After reading many positive opinions about Reaper I wanted to give it a chance.

Previously I've been using the free Kristal Audio. Works well and seems to fully support my Omega. Any one else using the Omega and with what software?

Should I be looking into a different interface? I think I would prefer a standard console type unit so I could access the cables easier. Firewire would be a plus also. Just not sure my more powerful laptop with Win8 has FW.

How many inputs and outputs do you require? What is your budget? There are a ton of great interfaces out there, from UA to Tascam. RME makes great (not inexpensive) firewire interfaces. I like Focusrite; you may find this helpful, http://us.focusrite.com/comparison-chart. If I had the dosh, I would have a UA Apollo.

I would like to stay at the same number of in/out connections I have with the Omega. I've been looking at the Alesis Multimix 8's. There's a USB and Firewire model. I feel like I'll have better results with a firewire unit. The multimixes are made more like standard mixers and I'm getting tired of having to go around the back of the Omega to add or switch mics.

The incompatibility of the Omega is anotehr reason I'm considering switching.

Honestly, it is quite a good product as a whole. I'd be happier with it if I could just get it to work better with otehr software. ProTools OK, Krystal Audio Engine - OK. Most other software is a headache to get it configured with.

How can reaper not recognize it? Wouldn't it pick up all hardware audio devices that have drivers installed?

Re: Lexicon Omega Users: Opinions, Experiences

That was the way I thought it worked too. The apps it's always worked with are still kosher but reaper only wants to recognize the built in mobo audio.

Tried reinstalling the omega drivers, rebooting and then reopening reaper. No reaper listed.

I don't run windows myself so what do I know, but this sounds like a fixable issue. I think even windows isn't so screwed up that ignoring random devices is normal :)

Yes. Sadly my old G4 iBook finally gave up. I have a new gateway laptop. Lots more horse power but Win8. :angryfire My desktop is Win XP which is what the Omega is connected to. I used to use a G$ Cube and it worked great in it's hey day but it's just too slow to keep up these days.

Honestly Garageband and the two G4's took care of my recording nees well and most importantly very easy and hassle free.

Try the asio4all drivers with it, see if it behaves better.

The preamps in the Omega are nice, but yeah, the USB drivers can be a touch twitchy.

Why not get a Macbook Air?

Believe me; had a macbook or any flavor been in the cards that would be sitting in the place of my new gateway. As I used to tell clients: "Macs like to work. PCs like to be worked on." Unfortunately macbook prices were just way out of my range when I got my new laptop. Plus, my faithful ibook gave up on me and I needed something for work asap.

I have asio4all installed. I may need to reinstall that again.
