Liipstick on a Pig? Need ideas...

Re: Liipstick on a Pig? Need ideas...

Translucent blue over grey primer. Add pinstripes to taste.

Re: Liipstick on a Pig? Need ideas...

The seller says the top coat is General Finishes "High Performance" wipe-on Polyurethane.

Looked it up..."voted as the hardest, most durable consumer polyurethane topcoat" LOL :)

Any sense in finishing over the poly with some kind of semi-transparent color coat or will that just end up with a thick and dull finish?

I would not think so

Re: Liipstick on a Pig? Need ideas...

Sounds rockabilly...got an example?

Nope. I thought of a color combination that wasn't an orange Gretsch. Now that I think about it, I really want that paint scheme on a Gretsch!

Re: Liipstick on a Pig? Need ideas...

So, I just bought a body to make a cool Tele-Strat hybrid in which to showcase a NOS set of Joe Barden Danny Gatton T-style pickups I just picked up recently. I'm so d@mn excited, it hurts!

This was my inspiration:

Problem is, this body is ugly. Really ugly.

The picture actually DOES it justice...ha ha!

The body is even more of an odd, flat-looking tannish-pink in person and the grain sucks, no character at all.

It was stated to be African Mahogany, but I'm fairly certain this is one of the Mahogany imposters, such as Lauan/Luan (aka: "Philippine Mahogany") or similar. Who knows.

I CAN tell you it's among the heavier Strat style bodies I've put my hands on. Comes in at just under 6 lbs completely bare.

Here is the body:

Any thoughts on how to proceed? It has some type of clear on it, which does nothing for the look but protect the wood.

I don't have spray equipment and the budget is tight, so I won't be sending it out for a professional refinish.

What would YOU do to this pig?

I don't think it's ugly at all, just unique...

I mean, it's wood. Some wood is naturally pretty. Some wood is pretty left natural.

Unfortunately, the only thing "pretty" about this piece of wood is that it is "pretty" flat and uninspiring.

Leaving it natural isn't an option. I want a guitar people won't mistake for an unfinished cabinet door :)

Re: Liipstick on a Pig? Need ideas...

then stain it on a crazy way, sand it off to bare wood, then keep sanding to make some wood dust, mix the dust with glue to make your own wood putty, mix the wood putty with a colorant and fill the grains on the guitar with it, once dry you can stain the guitar with a whole different color or different shade

Re: Liipstick on a Pig? Need ideas...

I agree, that is some lifeless looking wood. Scuff the poly with 600 grit, spray it to match your car or something, and call it done.

Re: Liipstick on a Pig? Need ideas...

If the colors resemble a 50s pastel colored boat of a car, then you nailed it. Pink, turquoise, peach, yellow, or even cream if you accent it properly.

Well, HiFiRebel, I love a good vintage-esque greenish-turquoise, so that's definitely an option:

And, Akio, you're right...I COULD match it to my car (I do love a bright lime green metallic), so I guess that's another option ;)

On a side note, is it a coincidence that the watermelon guitar AND the pizza guitar are both ESPs? :)

Nothing screams "21st century rockabilly" more than cars that no teenager could afford when new.
