Re: Limited edition duncans at musicians enemy!!

Someone should probably alert MF to the fact that they have an error in the product description...sometimes I think those guys could screw up a free lunch.

Re: Limited edition duncans at musicians enemy!!

Well, I requested that Musicians Friend add a note to their order puller to get me the lowest serial numbered set, if at all possible. Evan or Billy....can you tell me if the serial number is on the outside of the packaging? Also, I was under the impression that they were A2, although my favorite LP pickups are A5 anyway. When you say they have "more bite," do you mean the tone would be more bright than say a 59B?

I'm excited to get them! I'm turning that 2001 Les Paul Prem. Plus honeyflame into one of my most prized guitars by adding this set, not to mention that I'm going to ask Seymour to sign the back of the headstock with a silver marker at User Group Day.
This guitar is never being sold by me. Neither is the Goldtop w/C-5/59 & pull tones.

Gear, Make sure to give us a review once you have them installed. I wonder how similar they are to a set of A5 Antiquities?

Re: Limited edition duncans at musicians enemy!!

despite the MF stuff...these might be a good set of pickups to stick in my LP in my avatar to make it even more rare...hmmm...

Re: Limited edition duncans at musicians enemy!!

They seem expensive until you start seeing them pop up on Ebay in a year for $500.
If I had more ambition and money, regarding this, I'd buy up 3 or 4 sets.

Good question, Ryan. Now I'm wondering if they're basically A5 Antiquity humbuckers?

I'm sure I'll dig these pickups, since I jump between a Strat and Paul, and the sweeter vintage vibe of this set will narrow the gap between a vintage strat and Les Paul.
I'm usually more interested in tone than output anyway.

The GAS begins. Actually, I've put A5 mags in my Antiquties and prefer the A2's.

wow man, you pull all that off and that is going to be a gem of an instrument. Sit back and watch the value soar. LP premium plus and limited edition seth set plus Seymour's sig? Wow ONE OF A KIND doesn't quite describe that.

Re: Limited edition duncans at musicians enemy!!

i want a set, i think something as rare and special is definutly worth the money, maybe not if your just after a pickup, but they would hold signifigant value and would almost certainly be worth their retail price or more once they have all been sold and for people like me who like to have collectable, rare and valuable things its a very very reasonable price, i only hope there will be a set left for me when i can afford to order them next month, thier going in my Jem, or in my friends tele that im having

good work seymour duncan, i tottaly support you on this.

edit: any particular reason why they wont ship the pickup outside the us? this is somewhat arkward, however i should be able to get someone to buy the pickup in the us and sent it to me.

Yeah, I'm gonna give these the benefit of the doubt, and then make some tweaks like a magnet swap or pot change, or whatever, till the bridge pickup is exactly to my liking. I'm quite sure the neck will be killer!

I guess that I just don't like the embossed logo on the covers. I'm betting that is exactly what others love about them.

I never got off on the 50th annv. logo that was on the strat pickugard on their anny model.

+1. In fact, I'm pretty fond of the fact that my EVH's are "anonymous" zebras.

Re: Limited edition duncans at musicians enemy!!

I just think that if you have a vintage les paul, you'd kinda like to keep it vintage looking.

Let's listen to the words of Mr. Lover, shall we? LOL

I was recently at the Seymour Duncan plant up in Santa Barbara, and had a chance to view the regular process that they use in pickup manufacture, which is very impressive. The Vice President of Marketing, Evan Skopp, and Seymour himself showed me the special area they’ve set aside for the SH-55 and the Antiquity series. There’s an aged winding machine, which allows the operator to put a little stretch into the winding, just like the originals. How did you and Seymour join forces?

After the patent ran out, Seymour started making the pickups, and he did an awfully good job, not just in appearance, but in materials and workmanship and sound. Everything, down to finest detail, was intact. We had used plain enameled #42 wire. A lot of people would use plastic-coated wire, but the results weren’t the same. We used nickel-silver on the covers originally, sometimes called German silver, again due to its low conductivity. You can’t solder stainless steel, so the nickel-silver worked better. And that’s what you see on these special Duncan-Lover pickups. It’s really faithful to the original. The SH-55 will have my stamp of approval on it, and I’ll even get a small royalty on each sale. Now, that’s something that Gibson never got around to giving me! My name doesn’t show up in too many of these history books, and maybe they didn’t value design in those days. I guess that’s why they never paid me much [a wicked glint in his eyes signals that Seth is gently pulling my leg]. I did a lot of work, and now it seems to be getting recognized.

Now here’s an ad that Gibson ran on the 25th Anniversary of the patent for my pickup [displays a worn framed picture of a 1980 print ad for Gibson] promoting the company and recognizing how special my Gibson humbucking pickup was. There’s a signature on here saying “Seth Lover”, but it’s not mine. I contacted the company, and said, “Gee, I would have signed the ad myself if you’d asked,” and they responded, “We didn’t know you were still alive!” (rambunctious laughter from both Mr. and Mrs. Lover).

Here's the rest of the interview.

Re: Limited edition duncans at musicians enemy!!

Seth Lover - "Ted McCarty asked me to build him a special kind of pickup, which I did by hand."

Also of interest is that Ted McCarty and PRS released the PRS McCarty in 94.
Ironically 1994 was also the same year that Duncan and Seth Lover joined forces to release the SH-55. :22:

Holy CRAP! I just had an amazing revelation, people! If I install this Original Seth Lover 50th Ann. set in my year 2000 PRS McCarty, I will have the
"GIBSON THAT NEVER EXISTED." Ted McCarty died in 2001, and never got to see the pickups he commissioned Seth Lover to build for Gibson actually installed into his final creation! In 93/94, PRS consulted with Ted McCarty to Gibson-ize the PRS, basically turning out the last McCarty era Gibson. However, PRS used a copy of the Seth Lover A5 pickup, which is what Seymour just re-created, to exact Seth Lover specs, NOT PRS specs.

Ladies and Gentlemen, witness the 'McCarty/Lover Gibson that never was!!!!'
YEEEEEESSSSSS. That's what I'm doing with this pickup set, and I'm asking Seymour to sign the back of the headstock with a silver pen.

Off topic...I love the top on that PRS, it reminds me of fall foliage for some reason.

Re: Limited edition duncans at musicians enemy!!

so GJ (and others) how do you think these 50th anniversary A5-based seths will sound compared to the stock PRS McCarty pickups in a McCarty?

what about the A5-based seths compared to regular A2-based seths in a McCarty?

cheers

Re: Limited edition duncans at musicians enemy!!

Well, the PRS McCarty pickups are pretty vintage soundng, although they're potted. I don't know if PRS made them to Seth Lover specs, but I'm assuming PRS designed them to his own liking, based on the idea of the Seth A5. I've never heard A2 Seths in a McCarty, but have a feeling the A5's compliment it better, otherwise PRS would have used A2 McCarty Treble and Bass.

This particular PRS is not an everyday player, since I use my teal black one for that. I'm hoping these pickups sound pretty nice, and I'm happy. I'm most likely going to just consider that guitar a showpiece that's special to me. I have plenty of other guitars to abuse! Afterall, how many 'McCarty/Duncan/Seth PRS's' do you see floating around, with Seymour's signature? he he
If I ever get a chance to have Paul Reed Smith sign it, he's gonna flip when he sees it!

You'll lose your coil tap bro. If you want 4 conductor seths, call MJ. In fact, you should wind your own 4 conductor Seth at the UGD, just tell MJ that you'll need a brushed nickel cover with gold posts! She'll hook you up!

Re: Limited edition duncans at musicians enemy!!

thanks guys...

scott, would you think A2 or A5? ... i am not sure i want to use them in the PRS McC BLE though ... i'm thinking i want to try a set of seth's in my ibanez artist semi-hollow

cheers,
