Lindy Fralin mixed magnets

A guy I know is offering me an Eric Clapton strat with a set of Lindy Fralin pickups for a good price. But the pickups have mixed 3 and 5 alnico magnets. I've heard that he makes good pickups, but what does it mean for tone to have mixed magnets?

Re: Lindy Fralin mixed magnets

I think it for making the treblestrings less trebly and the bass(wound) strings clearer.

Re: Lindy Fralin mixed magnets

It more than likely is the same concept as the SD 5/2. The 5's keep the bass tight while the 2's open up the top end and keep it from being shrill. Fralin does have a website and his products are of top quality.

Re: Lindy Fralin mixed magnets

Thanks for the replys. I talked to a guy at Lindy Fralin and he said the E, A & G strings are alnico 3 and the D,B & E are Alnico 5. He said this brings out more mids? Not sure how, I'm just concerned that it will be weird. I'm looking for a vintage strat tone, not something different. Probably similar to the SD 5/2. Anybody know if mixed mags are radically different or a very subtle change.

Re: Lindy Fralin mixed magnets

It's unusual to have the A5 on the high strings -- usually they're on the low. Actually, I've NEVER seen a mixed mag pu with the A5 on the high. Maybe you have it backwards?
