I bought one earlier today. :)

Full review to come once I spend some more time with it. My first impressions are that I'm thoroughly impressed thus far.

Re: Line 6 G50 wireless system

I just sold a G30 at work to a customer today... let me know how you like that system.

Re: Line 6 G50 wireless system

When I do go wireless it will be one of those.

Re: Line 6 G50 wireless system

If I ever do go wireless it will be with one of those.

Whooooaaaaaa.

Re: Line 6 G50 wireless system

I have my eyes on one of those for a while now. Reviews and specs are very good. Looking forward to your review.

How do they compare to Shure and Sennheiser products in same price range?

Did the Relay series replaced the X2 series wireless products Line 6 has?

Re: Line 6 G50 wireless system

Cakire,

I don't know if the relay series replaced the X2 series as much as the relay series is a technological improvement. The relay series broadcasts in the WiFi range (2.4 GHz) where as the X2 series is in the more cluttered UHF (800-900MHz) range. Supposedly the relay series uses digital encoding to virtually eliminate the chance of accidently picking up a different signal during use.

I am interested to see the OP's feelings as I have been looking at the Line 6 relay series and the Brace Audio DWG-1000 wireless units.

Re: Line 6 G50 wireless system

I think that would look completely silly, and might even get in the way on anything like a Strat that has a top jack.

The pack can be easily clipped onto your strap. That's what most people do.

I just put mine in my back pocket

Re: Line 6 G50 wireless system

What piques my interest about the Line 6 relay series and the Brace Audio wireless units is that they both have >100 dB dynamic ranges, utilize digital rejection technology and are relatively low cost.

I am beginning to honestly consider getting one of these wireless units but I still would like to hear as many reviews as possible and even try one myself first.

Mwalluk, what unit do you use?

Re: Line 6 G50 wireless system

Hmmm... My Sennheiser unit went south recently, and I ordered a closeout X2 system from American Musical Supply. It may not be as good as the G50, but it only cost me $110. I guess I'll post a review when it gets here (hopefully tomorrow).

This appeal to me:

I don't like the pack you have to carry 'round with most wireless systems.

I remember that we sold quite a few of those at GC, and got quite a few back broken because the 1/4 inch plug had gotten broken off inside a jack of a guitar in the middle of a good gig. Just FYI.

Great idea, but IMO it doesn't work.

If you play a strat type guitar and Les Paul style guitar, you'll need 2 transmitters. They're both shaped differently.

The size of the transmitter might not only get in the way but also more likely to get hit on something and cause damage.

Once the 1/4 plug or transmitter is damaged, you're screwed.

Having a short 2 or 3 ft cable going into a transmitter in your back pocket is the way to go.

I never thought these stories were true until this happened to me…

I’ve been on the road for a little over twenty years, and never considered a wireless system for my guitar. My impression had always been that the sonic sacrifice and potential for problems simply weren’t worth a little more mobility on stage. (I’ve never been able to do spin kicks, anyway.)

On stage I play acoustic and electric guitars, and by the end of a show there’s usually a giant mess of cordal spaghetti on the floor for me to trip on, which I manage to do at least a couple times a night, often nearly ending up in a heap on the floor. At some point enough was enough, and I decided to try something new.

Line 6 has been part of my rig for a while (the M9 is a good friend – more on that later), and the Relay™ G30 digital wireless system looked like the right match for my needs. I hadn’t thought that a wireless system could be compact enough to fit on a pedalboard and still work decently, but I needed something small (we’re touring in a van) and easy to manage.

We were all pretty shocked with how well everything worked. The sound is clear, there was zero interference, and the latency (around 4ms) was imperceptible. I kept thinking I was missing some important detail that should make things more complicated, but the thing just plain works, and works magnificently. The biggest question in my head was why it had taken me so long to switch. No spaghetti, no stepping on my cable and stumbling, no compromise in tone. I’ll be adding another unit for my acoustic soon, and then look into some karate classes so I can start in on the David Lee Roth moves.

Re: Line 6 G50 wireless system

Now that I've had some time to mess around with it, here are my thoughts.

PROS:
-Zero interference. Not at once have there been any other audio signals coming into my amp and interfering whatsoever. The only sound that comes out of my amp is my guitar.
-When they say the G50 goes up to 200 ft, they friggin mean it: I've experienced no cut outs: I walked all the way from my amp in my practice room to the other end of our practice space building, and then went OUTSIDE and my bandmates said they heard me the entire time. This means I walked past several walls of soundproofed rooms and a brick outer wall, and it didn't cut out!
-If you have "cable tone" set to off, the cleans I get out of it are amazing. Bright, clear, and pristine.
-For the most part, your tone is not affected that much (see below)
-By adjusting the knobs on my amp, I've been able to successfully keep my original tone. (Again, see below)
-The latency is not noticeable whatsoever.

Cons/Neutral:
-It DOES color your tone a little bit. It takes a little bit of the gain away, and makes your tone slightly drier sounding. However, I was easily able to overcome this by adjusting settings on my amp.
-If you're using high gain, it adds a little extra feedback. However if you crank the cable tone knob to a longer length this cuts out the feedback, but that also makes your tone somewhat darker. Again, that can also be changed by dialing the knobs on your amp a little different. I keep my cable tone length somewhere between 15 and 30 feet, depending on how much feedback I'm experiencing.
-The clip doesn't hold on to the strap as tight as I would like. However, this is easily fixed by keeping it in my back pocket instead.
-The cable that goes into the jack of your guitar seems a little flimsy, and I'm not sure how I'd replace it if it goes bad. The input into the bodypack is some sort of 3 pronged jack.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase. I love running around on stage and putting a real performance on, and this will be the perfect remedy for being tethered to an amp. I'll finally get to gig with it next thursday.

Was the G50 really worth the extra cash than the base model G30? Not really, unless you happen to like the sound the extra "cable tone" gives off (the G50 has more "length" of cable to toy with), if you keep your gain at 10 at all times, or if you really need 200 feet of freedom (the G30 "only" goes to 100ft). The sound range is also somewhat more broad, so this may be the better model for you bassists out there. The housing is also a bit more tough than the G30, for you folks who are afraid of accidentally stepping on it.

Thanks dude. Great review!

The cable you mentioned, could it be the TA4f cable?

Sure is! After googling it, it looks like they're quite cheap to replace, should mine go bad. Good deal. :)

Re: Line 6 G50 wireless system

Hi All,
I'm David Holland, a newbie here.
I own an X2 wireless I've used for four years. I have the input cable capacitor removed. I measured the performance with a Audio Precision Portable One. The results were amazing around 5 Hz to Near 20K flat as an arrow. I actually like it better without the Cap, but was only removed for testing reasons. I love it.
I believe Guy Coker merged with Line 6. Guy actually sent me the unit for testing.
The Line 6 design is very similar in function as the Line 6 units. I have had flawless performance from the X2 and highly recommend them. As for the Brace DWG-100 unit, my bass player just purchased one and I'll update after some experience. It has great reviews and seems to be a solid unit. I read it has a 17.5 KHz high Frequency limit (well above guitar audio range). I doubt many guitarist would ever hear that.....
Thanks,
Dave
