Line 6 Helix Impressions?

Hi there,

I am looking for peoples opinions on the Line 6 Helix floor unit as I am looking into getting a higher end modeller for playing at home and want to find out what the general consensus is regarding it. I have read that by loading it with 3rd party impulse responeses it can become truly amazing , can somebody comment on this?

Thanks,
Phil

Re: Line 6 Helix Impressions?

It certainly looks impressive. It sounds good, too. But my experience with Line6 after I owned an HD500 for 5 years made me swear not to buy any high end gear from Line6. I opted for a Fractal AX8, and I am very happy.

Line 6 products are not worth it?
Was considering a Helix too, but the AX8 looks tempting...
Does it have any amp models or anything to plug in directly to a PA?

Re: Line 6 Helix Impressions?

From what I've seen on the gear forums, guys are liking their Helix units. I've toyed with the idea of getting one, but generally prefer to keep things simple with a bunch of separate stomps and a tube amp.

Re: Line 6 Helix Impressions?

The AX8 has over 200 amp models, and is designed to go to the PA. They also update the firmware with new stuff all the time, and their forum is a direct link to the people that design and build it. I didn't like how it was (and is) pretty hard to talk directly with Line6 about concerns, suggestions, etc. They have a history of few updates (though the Helix is better at this), and their 'feature suggestion' forum is essentially not monitored. So, if I am going to spend that kind of $$, I'd rather feel like they appreciate me as a customer.

BTW, I own several older pieces of L6 gear, and love the stuff I've kept, but I am not spending that kind of money for anything they do any more.

Re: Line 6 Helix Impressions?

It seems like line 6 has been and continues to push the envelope. The pod when released set a whole new standard opening up possibilities that where far above even equipment as good as the Johnson J-Station as one example. The pod has continued to evolve. The Variax guitars represent another achievement. For the price of a Les Paul Studio you can have a guitar that not only sounds good with it's traditional pickups but offers almost a limitless range of guitar modeling options that are truly representative of the real thing. Line 6 offers very good leading edge products at affordable prices. They aren't at the high end but what they offer gets the job done well enough for the average Joe guitarist. Does anyone have first hand experience with any of the AMPLIFi amps?

Re: Line 6 Helix Impressions?

Have there been any firmware updates since your purchase, Dave?

About 10. Or more. I lost count. It's like every other week. They have an active forum that the developers are actually on, so you can track down bugs and suggest things.

Re: Line 6 Helix Impressions?

I have a rackmount Helix that I rout through a power amp and cab (I'm gonna post a picture eventually) and I've been impressed overall with it. The updates are often. New amp models are free rather than having to buy them like in the past. Third party IR loading. I would recommend it.

Re: Line 6 Helix Impressions?

I spent $200 on a line 6 AMPLIFi 75 to play with and the phone interface looks very much like the Helix the amp sounds great with it's HiFi stereo set up sounds even better through my stereo system. Initially bought to try and dump because of the price but now I think I'm going to keep the thing because it really covers a lot of bases. http://store.line6.com/factory-refurbished-and-closeouts/line-6-amplifi-75-guitar-amp-bluetooth-speaker-system-with-ios-and-android-integration.html

Re: Line 6 Helix Impressions?

I have a Helix rack, which has the same firmware and interface. The difference is the separate foot controller and some extra I/O features. I went to his route so if I get into a band again, I'll only have to worry about one cable going back from my pedalboard.

So anyway, I like it. The amp models are really close to sounding like the real thing. Close enough that the average listener wouldn't know the difference, and close enough that they do have alot of that "tactile feel" that tube amps have. The preamp only versions sound really good when running into the power section of a tube amp as well. So if you're thinking of going the 4CM route with it, it will work well for that method.

The effects are superb! I love a good chorus on my cleans, and the tri-chorus model in particular is very lush. The delays and reverbs are very good as well, and the synth/pitch effects track very well, better than other synth/pitch effects I've messed around with in the past. They only warble when you screw up. There are more effects than that, but I've really only had the time to just scratch the surface.

I think I'll either end up using it in the 4CM with my Marshall JVM 410H, and another head for stereo with it's preamp in one of the Helix's loops, or maybe I'll get a Matrix poweramp for the Helix...I haven't decided. But for now, I've just been using it as a glorified headphone amp, and have been running it into the aux input of my truck's head unit when I'm on the road (I'm an over the road truck driver).

Re: Line 6 Helix Impressions?

On the Helix...can you assign the looper volume or feedback to the expression pedal?

Yes.

I have three expression pedals and set one for feedback on delays, one for wah only, and one that switches between volume and whammy.

Re: Line 6 Helix Impressions?

Fractal could learn a thing or two from Line6 about aesthetic design and the user interface. The Helix looks a lot more user friendly than the ax8 or axefx.

I'm hoping the next axefx will have a better screen and all that.

Agreed. The Fractal looks like such a pain to program if you're not sitting at a desk.

Re: Line 6 Helix Impressions?

He may be (I dunno), but if he says that he digs it, then I believe that he really does. He's such a superb player, pro, and a genuinely decent guy.

Awhile back, Pete posted a pic of one of his desks in his studio on his Facebook page. Under it was a pedalboard that includes his Helix. I asked how much he still used it, and he replied, "every day". I have no doubt that it's true.

Yes, they could. The Helix is stupidly easy to program.

How about feedback or volume on the looper itself (not the delays).
I will admit, the Helix looks great. But I'd pick the Fractal every time on sound.
