Hey guys,

Any one use one of these Line 6 modulation pedals, the MM4?

How did you like it?

all opinions welcome, good and bad...

Thanks!

Re: Line 6 MM4 modulation pedal

I've owned three of them. The first one crapped out so I had to return it and the other two worked out great. there were plenty of options and excellent sounds, but it was too much pedal for me. If you like options or use a bunch of different effects throughout a show or need some in studio use type stuff, then it's great. It just seemed like a waste that I only really used four of the effects, and of those four I only REALLY used two.

But yes, it's a most excellent pedal!

They are alright and versatile. Its certainly not as if every effect is stellar but they are all decent.

Depends what all your looking for. You might be better served just buying one or two really good sounding pedals for effects you really use rather than having 16 where none are stellar and you dont even make use of most

Re: Line 6 MM4 modulation pedal

I had one for a while and I made good use of it when I did have it. If I bought one again I'd have Keeley do their mod on it, as that would fix all of the minor issues I had with the pedal. That being said, I liked the array of effects it had to offer, and all of them were very adjustable and usable and sounded good.

Re: Line 6 MM4 modulation pedal

I've used mine since Line 6 first sold them in the late 90's.

What I like is not being bound by stock FX sounds. It's really a world of FX tones, easily programmable to 4 buttons. You just tweak the knobs, settle on what you like, then hold down the button till it flashes for 14 seconds. Stored!

The best thing is that if you're looking for a particular sound, but don't really know what you want, you can just keep playing the part and turning the rotary dial till something sounds appropriate. Rather than just stock FX tones, you can create ones that sound unique.....especially if you mix it with the green delay pedal.
Some of the mixes I get between the 2 pedals sound like nothing I've heard before.

It's a lot of bang for buck and sounds good. Of course, if you had the originals of all their models, your pedalboard would be 10 feet long!

Thanks for the replies, guys!

Why did your first one crap out? I read some reviews on HC and a few other people had problems with it crapping out... Did something happen, or did it crap out for no reason?

Thanks for that link. I didn't know Keeley did a mod for this pedal... Very cool.

Re: Line 6 MM4 modulation pedal

I've never had one "crap out" but it's not uncommon for the nuts on the switches to get loose, and if they do, the switch doesn't work.

The switches are like spring loaded plungers that touch a digital pad inside, so if the nut gets loose, the keypad inside isn't being activated. That may be the source of any complaints about reliability. Easy solution....make sure they're tight.

Re: Line 6 MM4 modulation pedal

There was an entire run of the MM-4's that didn't work out of the box. They were a duller blue color, generally, and failed to work when you plugged them in. I'm not quite sure what was wrong, but sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't, so I took it back to Sam Ash and they just gave me another one. no big deal though, seeing as the other two worked out just fine and, otherwise, is a great pedal. I'd highly recommend it.

Re: Line 6 MM4 modulation pedal

I need to ressurrect this thread.

I've been taking a hard look at my modulation lately.

Right now I have an MXR Phase 100 going into a Deluxe Memory Man. The vibrato and the chorus in the DMM are not cutting it. So I've been on a modulation search. The DMM is leaving to make more room. I'll put a BOSS DD7 there instead.

I've been taking a long look at the Line 6 but decided to keep the MXR and get a BOSS Super Chorus and a TR 2. Theys sound great but I'm still tempted by this pedal. I could get all these sounds plus a flange, Uni-Vibe and more? Does it sound too digital or does it sound real?

I like to turn stuff on and off and maybe change rates on the fly. Seems like with the programmable knobs I'll be able to do that. Should I just go this route?

Re: Line 6 MM4 modulation pedal

Thesounds on the MM4 are pretty good, not amazing IMHO but good, useable for sure however NONE of those 4 button Line 6 pedals are really road worthy...

Re: Line 6 MM4 modulation pedal

Mine has been great for me, both for studio and gigs. I have had it for a few years now, no probs, it was in scruffy used shape when I got it.

Re: Line 6 MM4 modulation pedal

Okay. I just bought one on ebay for $100. First time I've ever bought any gear I hadn't tried first.

Wish me luck.

Re: Line 6 MM4 modulation pedal

Got it today, a half hour before practice! I played it with my band first then took it home to tweak.

I like it but I'm not blown away.

The choruses are solid. The analog held its own next to my BOSS Super chorus when I ab'd them.
The tremolos are not what I expected (I was thinking TR2 and these are Fender Twin.
I've never had any experience with a U Vibe so I'm not sure how to use this one.
The Leslie is amazing! "Black Hole Sun" is right there.
The phasers and flangers feel limited. I like that wide 'wash' sound and I'm not quite getting it.

I think I notice the volume drop. It's not so much quieter but loses presence. I got mine so cheap that it might be worth the extra dough for a Keeley mod. I foudn it hard to cut through the mix with it on. My bass player was closer to my amp though and thought it sounded great.

So I'm 90% happy. I'm going to take some time with it before I send it out for a mod.

BTW, I'm in love with the BOSS DD7. Don't miss my DMM at all.
