Line 6 recording

Can someone explain to me the differences between the Gearbox, Toneport and Guitarport?

Also, how is their recording software Riffworks? Anyone like it?

For my purposes, I want to go direct from guitar to laptop (Mac) to record ideas, tweak amp models and stuff with software, and if possible create drum loops. Garageband, which is all I have right now, is so-so on the amp models and drums. Thanks!

the TonePort and Guitar Port are essentially the same, the TonePort just gives you things like XLR ins and such depending on the model.

Gearbox is the software/interface.

No experience with the recording software...

Hey Alex, I got a Toneport UX1 (with gearbox included) I have had it 2 years and had no problems, I love it. The toneport is a much better interface than guitarport you have XLR in for vocal or cab micing if you wanted to do that
For the money you can absolutely NOT get a better product with as much virsitility and Great tone.
Riffworks is ok, its set up as loop recording(which I do not mesh well with) But can be made to do linear recording...I play with riffworks, its fun,but for recording I use Reaper.
The toneport IS a soundcard, and its probably better than the one you have in your computer, the best thing you can do is get a pair of powered studio monitors...or a power amp and monitors as I did...you may even find you are playing thru your computer more and less thru your amp,my computer is now a 120 watt per channel guitar amp/studio PA
Of course you can use it fine with existing computer speakers if you need to.
I was so impressed with the line6 spinal puppet model amp (metal green channel on spider amps)that I bought a SpiderII amp so I could have that tone for jamming with friends.

So you connect the Toneport to computer via USB, right? Then to hear what you're playing you... run a cable from the stereo out to your powered monitor or speaker setup? Some of the online reviews I'm reading are pretty negative, but it sounds like the people don't know how to set it up properly...

I have a keyboard amp that I could run it into for the time being.

Funny you bring this up, I just bought the Gearbox the other day. See this thread, I just threw down a quick clip.

I think for $99 you can't really beat it. I don't play other then for fun but sometimes you just want to record some stuff and I've tried direct outs form amps, etc and just can't do it right in a apartment setting.

The Rifftracker works ok, but like he stated above, it's a looping style recording software which kinda sucks for guitar. I also use Krystal recording software and it works good for me and is free.

I don't have any experience with the other Line6 variations so i can't help you there.

I know of no way to get the sound out to your PC sound card and speakers with the Gearbox or any other USB based interface, they act as their own sound card. You can either use monitor speakers or I run it into my Vox Vavletronix amp set to clean.

no no you dont get the sound out of your computer soundcard, The TONEPORT has a built in soundcard, you configure your computer to play through your toneport. For instance when I play music on my computer now it runs thru my toneport and amp/monitors,before I got a power amp and studio monitors I ran my outs of my toneport into the line in on my computers soundcard(it has a Creative labs soundblaster live card) maybe all soundcards dont have line ins I dont know. Sorry if I confused you, yes you could run it to a keyboard amp. Go to line6's website, they have a knowledgebase and forums that can be a great help.
