The times I heard it it did the very high gain stuff quite nice but other than that it wasn't my cup o' tone.
But try it out yourself and if you like it, you like it, period.

I owned one and have heard 3 of em live with various bands....they always sound sterile and have a nasty nasal top end that is near impossible to dial out. I guess with a very good cab they'd be alright, but for how much they cost, get something better, like an attax hughes and kettern!

Ive played them lots doing college gigs in the past and heard a few of them used by other bands live..
Il be honest i think they sound terrible.. personal opinion, but one that you will find from most ex owners of line6 spiders.
The guitarist in my band just replaced his with a peavey valveking head, he was amazed at how good the peavey sounds in comparison.
Another friend sold his spider 2x12 combo and got an engl powerball (big price jump) but again, it was after owning it for a while that he realised the spider wasnt a very nice sounding amp.
So personally id advise against them.

yeah, i tend to find line6 amps OK at best. their effects are great, but their amps don't sound half as good as when they're trying to emulate. great concept though, but the tones just don't work for me. this is just my own personal opinion of course, after owning a flextone for 5 years and playing vairous other models.

i've heard them sound REALLY good through a line 6 4x12 cab by a good player he was playing everything from clean, to blues, rock, alternative, hard rock, punk, to metal and damn with the onboard effects he got some amazing sounds.
I think they have lots of potential if in the right hands, but yeah you start to look at other things when you see the price tag if buying that setup new.

I've got one and that's exactly how I feel about it. The clean and metal channels are decent at best but the crunch channel is just awful.

Keep in mind that the Spider II is the low end of the Line 6 product line. They have a lot of good products - but this isn't one of them (and from what I've read, the new Spider III isn't any better).
I have a Spider II and have gigged with it. As was mentioned above, they have this tendency to inexplicably quit in the middle of a show. They are a complex computer and they tend to go "blue screen" (think Windows).
They are also extremely sensitive to any noise coming into the input. So pedals are pretty much out of the question. But they have a lot of onboard effects. The trouble here is, there is no wet/dry mix. It's all or nothing. (Even my old Crate had a wet/dry mix.)
I still use my Spider II as one of my stereo amps when I play outdoors and need the extra power. But I play it clean so I'm kind of wasting its potential.
Bottom line: it's a great bedroom amp, and maybe even for recording, but I wouldn't recommend gigging with it.

+1. When I do use mine, I just use the effects on it and run it to a real amplifier.

The combos I've played were PIERCING in the high end. Line 6 should really work on their EQ programs. It shouldn't cost that much, I think.
I feel your FM is a way better basic amp than the Spider. I don't care for the OD channel, but the clean is a good basic tone that should work well with pedals
