Has anyone played one? Were they usable for recording or is there a good reason they are out of production?

They are out of production awaiting a Variax II- plus bass players dont generally need lots of sounds, as they tend to stick with one, so it was a bit of a hard sell. The bass player in my band owns a 4 & 5 string. They both sound great- certainly good for recording and live.
