what is the difference between a 'line out' on an amp and an output to the speaker(s)? (or headphones for that matter)

The speaker out puts have the full energy of the amplifier going through them are designed for driving the speakers... Line outs on the other hand are a low level output source for connection to another amp... or to a mixer... A headphone line out is basically the same its just been toned down so it sounds good through the headphones and usually when you plug into them it turns off the signal to the power section of the amp for just quiet use... An trick to do with the old Marshall studio 15's was to plug the speaker into the headphone output... as it was attenuated you could crank the amp and not get evicted from your appartment...
