Line6 Variax..best guitar ever?

I just clicked on a link and I'm getting impressed. They have a workshop where you can modify the guitar and the tones. You can add humbuckers/single coils/effects/etc. Any one actually tried it?

Re: Line6 Variax..best guitar ever?

I went into a store to try it out, and the guy plugged it in and realized it didn't have any batteries. Then he realized there were no batteries in the entire store. So I left.

I always found it odd that the guitar supposedly sounds like however many instruments, but they all feel the same (no different scale lengths, neck profiles/radii, etc). Maybe I'm weird, but I'm not sure I could get into that.

I'll start by saying that I own a V300. I'm not saying it's a bad guitar though the workmanship on the 300/500 is often not the greatest. It certainly gets high marks for versatility. I really like the way you can do alternate tunings as part of the patches. Another cool thing is the way you can program Variax patches in the POD XTL as part of the POD's patch.

Bottom line is that it's some nifty electronics in a cheapo import guitar. Some are pretty good but it's pretty much $300 worth of electronics in a hardtail Squier.

Re: Line6 Variax..best guitar ever?

i own a 700 and it's definietly not an import level guitar considering the workmanship and materials(but it's also about double the price of the 500). It's great fun to play with and just really unlimited guitars and tunings in one(i own the workshop program so i have some more options) and it really gets some great sounds out of it. in some cases the likness compared to the original is huge and sometime imo it even sounds better. Just a more metal version with different body styles would be cool.

I think eventually I'll get the Acoustic Variax. The demos sound great, and it would be much easier for recording.

I would get a Variax just to play around with the Sitar, Banjo, and some of the other more unique sounds.

Re: Line6 Variax..best guitar ever?

i want a variax, but id surely have to get a warmoth body version, though my desire for a variax is smaller than my desire for other guitars, i would be much more inclined to buy one if they did a version with a top quality floyed rose locking trem, and some new models that would suit the guitar more, that way i could play the alternative tunings and have some nice sounds to play with.

or id like a Variax hardtail Strat/Tele.

Re: Line6 Variax..best guitar ever?

They are a great tool! I actually just posted on my site listed below a Variax 500 for sale. I have 2 of them and don't need the second one. It's brand spankin new that I already upgraded to the new O/S version 3.0. $550 shiiped within the lower 48. That'd save you about $150-200 over what MF is selling them for right now. Email me if interested out of my profile.

Re: Line6 Variax..best guitar ever?

I tried a 500 a while back and it was interesting. To my ears the fender models lacked something, but I was impressed by the humbucker models considering how different the guitar's construction is from a Les Paul.

I like the look of the 700. Maybe a used one someday...

Re: Line6 Variax..best guitar ever?

Men and their toys. It would be a nice toy for all of us to play with  Not sure if I would want to use it out through.

Re: Line6 Variax..best guitar ever?

the 700 isnt that bad looking, but the 500 is horrendious, it looks like an affinity squier.

And no visible pickups is VERY weird to me. I couldnt own one on that factor alone.

They are a toy, nothing more. Now, If you could buy thoes electronics and put them in a normal guitar, it'd be great.

Line 6 should work on miniaturising the circuitry involved and packaging it as a retrofit option for any guitar.

+1. I haven't played them, but it would be so cool for any guitar to be able to do that. Then one can truly say that guitar was taken to the next level.

Re: Line6 Variax..best guitar ever?

the acoustic model is wonderful, and would and is a great idea for those owning a small home studio but doesn't have the room or cash for the individual guitars. I'd certainly use one live, and it would be great for my solo looping shows.

There are some stunning Variax transplants done by Institute of Noise members.
