Linux recording project started...

So yeah, I'm going to start a project for getting recording started using Linux. So far the PCMCIA hammerfall card works on my laptop and with linux, so I'd have to get a multiface or digiface. Audacity provides decent audio editing (but I can also boot into windows if I need to). I'll see about later on getting a mini-itx machine (no fans) so I can have a dedicated recording machine.

Anyone else record using Linux, or a laptop?

I record on a Laptop, but I have to ask.

Why do you want to record on Linux? There really are basically no programs for it.

But if I "really" need windows for that part, the sound cards come with the proper software, and one could probably install Windows and that software on a big enough flash disk, hence I could probably get away with using the same machine for both. However, I'm a total newbie, so if I'm wrong, please let me know so I don't dig myself a money hole lol

Well to be honest, I've never heard of anybody recording on Linux. I've heard of people trying it briefly, but come back to OS X, as there's just no support, programs, plug-ins, etc for Linux. if it's just demo stuff, you should be doing fine, but if yo want to add softsynths, midi stuff, multi-track recording, etc, etc... I don't even know where to begin.

RME makes amazing stuff - you'll be fine with either of the cards. If possible, though, I'd opt for a PCMCIA Firewire card, and plug a Fireface in. That way, you won't have any troubles if you upgrade to a desktop recording system later on. (They do make PCI to PCMCIA cards, but I'd just stick with firewire.)

If you're unable to go with a Mac, I'd just max out the systems specs as far as RAM and whatnot, and stick with Windows. The plus side to Windows is that literally everything is pirateable, short of hardware.

Well for now this will have to do, but yeah, I want a Mac. You know, maybe I should just wait until I have the cash for one, since my wife does graphic art and design. But thanks!
