lipstick question

Can someone try to describe the tone lipstick pick-ups will give me in a strat?
All I can find on web-sites is the word "jangly" tone.
Have no idea what thats supposed to mean.

I have a white painted start I did myself and was thinking of dropping-in a set SD lipsticks.

Re: lipstick question

I have some. They have a little sharper attack. Kind of metallic but not at all shrill. No mud. In fact, I can really hear every string. Pretty darn cool, and different, with overdrive. Check out Jimmy Page playing his Dano on the latest Zep DVD(the 3 disc set with sandunes on the cover) and you will see how sweet and nasty they can be. Yup....I like em'.

OK ...possible dumb question... Would they be primarily for ultra-clean paying? Mike

There are no tone police that are going to invade your room should you run these through distortion. Just because a pickup has listed that it sounds best for certain styles doesn't mean you can't use it for other styles. Every pickup just happens to have its own sound and therefore will sound different through distortion, and the style listing on the tone wizard is just a generalization. I can use my Jazz for metal if I want, it will just sound a little bit different through think distortion than, say, a '59 or JB would.

Re: lipstick question

I love them distorted. You can get them to fit a strat cheap at GFS(likely not as tasty as the duncans) but they are all wound differently....the bridge being pretty hot(8.4 or something). You'll like it. Its different and fun. Play the neck clean for convention and amp up and overdrive that bridge for more nastiness than you would expect. Yup, I still love em'.
PS-Typing on this forum is more fun than work but I'm off in 15 minutes.

Re: lipstick question

Whats GFS?
I was actually thinking of putting in a cheaper set till I have the bucks. I know it can be a crap-shoot...but sometimes cheap stuff can surprise you.
And sometimes its just cheap

Re: lipstick question

Guitarfetish.com = GFS. I like GFS pickups. They are inexpensive(especially on Ebay) and sound pretty darn good to my ears. I have the lipsticks and the Liverpools(Filtertron-like). I figured I would try them out and decide if I wanted to upgrade to Duncan lipsticks and TV Jones Filtertrons but right now I'm pretty satisfied.
