Listening to Solid State Amps and Digital Pedals for even fairly long periods....

Re: Listening to Solid State Amps and Digital Pedals for even fairly long periods....

I like solid state amps and I also like tube amps . . . I've found that it's hard to find a good solid state guitar amp since usually they are just offered as cheap amps with cheap speakers and poor design.

I've never heard a modeler I liked live. The guy I replaced played a Vetta that hurt...literally hurt. Michael Romeo uses em live and it's a real shame to see a great player destroy it with crappy tone.

and Teletubbies DON"T make you sick? I swear I get a headache just thinking of that show. no offense if you're like into them or something.

Re: Listening to Solid State Amps and Digital Pedals for even fairly long periods....

Are you guys playing some seriously crappy SS amps or something? Maybe something bought out of a back of a van with names like Femnder, Vocks, and Marshul? I've played SS all my life and just recently got a fancy tube amp. And I have to say they both have their place and there are things that each of them do better than the other. But a blanket statement like "all SS stuff sucks" is just ludicrous.

That's exactly why I love the older ones with discrete transistor circuitry over op-amps.

Re: Listening to Solid State Amps and Digital Pedals for even fairly long periods....

I meant . . . you want no clipping with SS. You definitely want clipping with tube. Thats the difference. ;)

I was continuing in your light-hearted vein. You probably wouldn't need 800 watts in a bedroom. :D

You'ld probably only use a watt or so in that environment. Tube or SS. ;)

(You take me too seriously.)

Actually Artie, clipping isn't bad with solid state - that's why it is used in many distortion pedals.

And don't tell anyone this - look up the spec sheets yourself. As the current flow between emitter and collector increases (e.g. like the power transistor most often used in vintage solid state equipment: 2N3055), the beta slowly increases and then rapidly decreases.

This is the "natural rounding of signal peaks" that only tubes are supposed to have - ahem - the myth that only tubes have it, and transistors "clip" distinctly - is a myth.

Check it out.

Re: Listening to Solid State Amps and Digital Pedals for even fairly long periods....

Ive had lots of solid state guitar amps and my conclusion is that they dont cut through the mix, they sound relatively sterile and static like, and that the other gearhead musicians that see my shows disapprove of them unless they are used for metal.

Re: Listening to Solid State Amps and Digital Pedals for even fairly long periods....

There is definitely a listener fatique point, and I think square wave solid state signals and A/D-D/A can accelerate the threshold. I feel the same way. Especially when I'm using headphones. If I've got a tube preamp I can play into cans a lot longer.

Not to hijack, but one thing I absolutely cherish about being with Seymour Duncan is that there is a tremendous respect for tone, and it includes a respect for analog signal path. Without saying anything confidential, you guys will see over the next couple years exactly what I mean.

Thats a good point. And I'll look into the "beta" thing.

Another point is, many of us listen to our guitar Gods on SS stereos, and they sound good. So, SS itself, has the potential to sound good, its just the way its implemented that matters.

My H&K Edition Blue 60 SS amp sounds killer.

Re: Listening to Solid State Amps and Digital Pedals for even fairly long periods....

I've not heard a nice SS amp. Not saying they don't exist, but they are rare and I'm not a fan, at all.

I've never heard a tube amp I wouldn't buy on the spot, had I the money.

Well, Michael Romeo has a pretty hideous tone on studio too...

im not a fan of my friend's vetta half stack for reasons aformentioned...doh!

Re: Listening to Solid State Amps and Digital Pedals for even fairly long periods....

wow, ive heard some tube amps that are grating too. i can't listen to randy rhodes for very long, and he used one of the most famous tube amps ever. and allan holdsworth got some of the warmest, organic sounds out of his pearce amps and a steinberger.
if you are going after classic sounds, use classic gear. if you are searching for something new, anything is fair game.
btw, i'd never trade my digital echoplex for any analog looping system.
