Little bit of help

I borrowed a broken squire j bass from a buddy to have a repair to mess with. The neck was cracked. I repaired the neck but the clear finish on it was messed up from the crack and the sanding to get the repair smooth. I want to try and repair the finish. What does squire/fender use for their clear coat. Will it just be poly? I have some shellac but don't want to use that if I don't have to. I don't mind getting some poly though.

Re: Little bit of help

Most Squiers will be gloss poly. A few series have Satin Poly.

Re: Little bit of help

What do you mean by poly? Polyurethanes? There are two types of poly finishes for guitars.

Most cheapo guitars and Squiers in particular have a polyESTER finishes, while MIA stuff has polyURETHANE finishes. Urethanes are softer than esters. Esters become a bit dull and loose their shine over time, while urethanes retains the gloss. Urethanes also age like pup covers do, they yellow out a bit. Looks cool, it gives the guitar a deeper finish over time, especially on clearcoated maple necks.

Sand everything bare then you can spray whatever you want on it.

Re: Little bit of help

I dont think I would try to repair the finish on that neck. I think you would be better off stripping it and then putting a whole new finish on it.

Re: Little bit of help

Yip, much easier to sand it all down and refinish the whole thing.

Also an opportunity for some Tung oil satin goodness ....
