when i asked the same question a while back when i had a 5150 they told me sell the 5150 get a mesa !

Re: little help please!

Something to remember when trying to find a tone comparable to something like the Black Album is to realize that you simply can't do that with one guitar.

When i listen to the Black Album, I hear serious guitar layers. Definately more than just 1 or 2 guitars. So you just simply can't expect to be able to sound like that by yourself straight out of your amp.

have you seen the metallica sm performance live? they have killer tone ! i want something similar no the same i know they have lots of sh1t but something similar !

Re: little help please!

My point is, it doesn't really matter if you're using a 5150, single rect, or a vht. If that sound is what you are really after, it's all about a sick amount of bass, heavy use of palm mutes, a heavy right hand, and without having it in front of me, i'd say a compressor and a chorus of some kind.
I haven't heard that album in a while, someone else might be able to correct me here. But that's just from what I remember off the top of my head.

Re: little help please!

I don't care metallicas tone but you should get near the trivium tone with your equipment. Maybe a tubescreamer in front help to tighten the sound up a bit. Remember you are not able to get a quadtracked studio with any amp!

do i put it in front of the dirty channel or the clean one? also what does the compressor do?

Re: little help please!

The dirty channel! I use it as a clean boost. It doesn't change the sound much.. just a bit tighter and fatter....

At which volume do you play the amp?

btw never tested this on a mesa... wait a bit DSS can tell you much more about this amp and how to achieve a good metal tone with it

Re: little help please!

The 5150 would have nailed the Trivium tone.

But, I set mine up with bass at 11:00-11:30, mids at 10:00-10:30, highs at 10:30-11:00, presence at 12:00. Gain is at 1:30 with an OD pedal engaged, all on the Modern mode.

It changes the tone a LOT, IMO, especially on a Mesa.

Recto's need to be turned up a bit to really start juicing the mids, unfortunately.

Re: little help please!

My fault:
I meant it doesn't change the sound much compared to using a distortion pedal with the clean channel for example ;)

Re: little help please!

No harm done. It makes more of a difference with my Mesa than it ever did with my 5150, though.

hey man by any chance you got some clips recorded with your live setup?

Re: little help please!

Not yet, I've been trying to sort some things out with the band, gear, etc...

We can't find a singer, I have some problems with one of the other guys, still can't find a singer, I've got a new axe on the way, need to get some new speakers, trying to figureout my pedalboard, etc.

Re: little help please!

did you really ask where to put the tube screamer? Dude - I can do Black Album tone of the 5150model, the Mesa(preferred), a cheap pedalboard, and a straight up Peavey solid state. did you really sell a 5150 and get a mesa? Just becasue you couldn't get a sound - and that sound. And don't frget effects. A little delay won't hurt in there.

Huh? WTF?

A, you won't get the black album tone out of anything but James Hetfields right hand and amps, paired up with the producers ear and equipment. Even with the amps and right hand, the tone screams "multi(5+)-mic'd and processed to hell."

He sold the 5150 because he wasn't getting a tone he liked out of it. Nothing wrong with that.

Delay will only make it sound muddier... never put any effects on a rhythm dirty guitar tone, unless it's something like an OD, Noise Gate, or EQ or compressor post-recording.

Re: little help please!

Hey - all I'm sayin' is that I see a post by a guy looking for Trivium/Metallica sounds and he got rid of a 5150 and a Mesa because they didn't pony up those sounds. I don't think the problem is the amp. I can walk into the guitar center of your choice, pick up the first LP I come to, plug into any Peavey Transtube over 30 watts, futz with the eq/gain for about a minute, and rip the intro to Enter Sandman close enough that you'd be in the front of the store wondering why they put that album on. If I add a bit of really tight delay and mix it low it will sound that much better.

Perhaps I have Hetfields right hand technique -I don't know. And I appologize for not having your Eric Johnson-esque ears. Or perhaps your studio experience. Either way though - the BASIC tone is about 95% available straight through most modern high gain amps. I'm suggesting that this guy examine some other possible causes for not getting the sound - like how to work an eq, or the muting, or the gain. He didn't know where to put the Tube Screamer - that's a cry for help, not a recommendation for a new toy as an excuse for not getting those tones. That's wtf.

Re: little help please!

i sold the 5150 cause i never got a tone a liked , not becasue i couldnt dial the metallica tone !
