little work in the shop

does anyone want to see some in progress pics of a tele being rebuilt? Think Bruce Springsteen's old stripped tele.

more to follow, I will be stripping the body today, and refinishing if I have time.

Re: little work in the shop

I can't believe you even had to ask, man. Get those pics up here!

Re: little work in the shop

I will have a couple in a little bit, I am sanding the old finish off right now. took a break to get out of the dust and get a small snack.

Re: little work in the shop

I don't follow, you're in the SD forum and you thought you had to ask?

Please, kind sir, get on with the show :32:

little liquid to make the top grain look good.

body is stripped now but the sun is going down, and the freshly nitroed bakelite is still drying. will take pics when I can.

NIce............
(I would like to see and artist series Tele for "Bruce" I wonder why they haven't given him one yet, heck everyone else has one.)

Re: little work in the shop

Teles, I start liking them more than strats...guitar building/moding threads are like drugs to me. I can never have enough.

Re: little work in the shop

What is up with the control cavity rout?

Forstner'd only / no router used on that rout?

Also, the bridge pickup cavity is different as well - what is the story with this body?

Re: little work in the shop

The body looks like swamp ash...is it? The grain patter on the front (the V near the bottom especially) makes it appear to be a 2 piece body, but if it is I surely cannot see the seam. Does either the front or the back have a veneer of any kind one it, or is that a one piece body?

I thought the control cavity looked unfinished a bit, but I've never had a tele apart so I don't know what to look for.

Re: little work in the shop

Yeah, looks like somebody tried to eat the wood, not rout it. I have a couple of home-made bodies with these scoops, its due to ineptitude with the tools. The router digs in and you get the 'teeth-marks' effect

Re: little work in the shop

actually not done with a router, but a drill bit. could be smoothed out a bit but it is very functional. Jeff, it is a two piece swamp ash body. the seam is more pronounced on the back.

Re: little work in the shop

Did you build that body?

If so, did you do the neck pocket with Forstner bits as well? If so, nice work, it looks really clean!

Re: little work in the shop

I did not build this body, the neck pocket was routed with a template but the control cavity was not, you did get the forester bits right.

I was thinking the same thing. It's such an iconic tele that I can't believe they didn't make both a Custom Shop version and a MIM road worn version.

Re: little work in the shop

When you get to putting it back together you'll need a Jazz Bass string guide.

Re: little work in the shop

cool man. is this the project that's going to have that old staircase pine wood-turned neck on it?

no pine necks, they are cut into body blanks right now. it will have an old maple neck though. I have some maple thats around 110 years old, used to frame a house. makes great necks.

Re: little work in the shop

thought i would update this a little with a mostly finished body, I will be working a little more on the finish and getting it back to some black guard specs. i just realized I didn't upload any picks of the new black bakelite guard. Since this is just based off the Springsteen tele I have pictured up there I decided that I will just be using blackguard style parts and no others like his lp style jack plate.

I also decided to not change the route from the forester bits, I do feel like it adds character to the guitar. I also had a couple dings in the body and left the black nitro in those dings. I think you guys might actually like them (they are all on the back).
