Live Hangout - Come Join Oz Noy

Scott Olson

SD Media Manager
Oz Noy has been a great friend of the SD family for some time, an accomplished musician who has appeared on many records and toured with a long list of artists (see below). He's the kind of guitarist you could close your eyes and after just a couple notes know it's him - a sonically unique style and immense chops. He'll be joining us in this thread for the remainder of the week so feel free to pull up a chair, grab a beer and ask any questions you may have!

Oz Noy has performed, toured and recorded with Richard Bona, Chris Botti, Gavin DeGraw, Harry Belafonte, Cyndi Lauper, Clay Aiken, Akiko Yano, Wonder Girls, Toni Braxton, Phoebe Snow, Nile Rogers, Mike Clark, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, Dave Weckl, Mike Manieri, John Patitucci, The East Village Opera Company, Roger Glover, Bill Evans, The Gil Evan Orchestra,Warren Hayes, Gove’t Mule, The Allman Brothers, Allen Toussaint, Eric Johnson, Mike Stern, John Abercrombie, Steve Lukather, John Medeski, Don Was, Nelly Furtado, Natasha Bedingfield, Phillip Phillips, Andy Grammer, Angelique Kidjo, Matisyahu, Jennifer Hudson, Henry Butler, Gart Hudson, Don Henley, Patti Austin, Take 6, Michael Buble, Josh Groban, Phil Ramone, Paul Shaffer, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Sting, Allison Krauss Foreigner, Patty Smyth, Wiz Khalifa, Shelea, Jordin Sparks, Average White Band among others.

Re: Live Hangout - Come Join Oz Noy

Hi OZ! Welcome to the forum! Quite a diverse group youve played with! Congrats on your success and being so in demand! What are your most used guitars and of course, what Seymour Duncans do you run? When you are playing with some of the known guitar "guitar heros" such as Warren Haynes and Eric Johnson, do you mostly play rhythym guitar with them?

Re: Live Hangout - Come Join Oz Noy

Thanks for hanging with us, Oz!

That's a very big, rather diverse list. What do you bring to these artists, and what do you learn from them?

Re: Live Hangout - Come Join Oz Noy

Wow, that's a pretty big and diverse list of credentials right there.

I guess the first thing that pops to mind is, how do you want/have/need to approach all those different kinds of music/artists with all those different nuances while being, at least mostly, equally good at all of them?
How do you begin and say to yourself "I'm gonna give everything I got today" when "today" might be quite different from "yesterday" and then again "tomorrow"?

Do you need to approach music itself in a specific way or it's just that you just need to open your mind and enjoy everything to its' fullest and for what it is?

Thanks and welcome!!!

Re: Live Hangout - Come Join Oz Noy

do you still play the bitter end at all?

Re: Live Hangout - Come Join Oz Noy

I mostly use my Strat Costume shop 68' that Fender made for me, the sunburt is regular tunin & Red one is 1/2 down. also using my Costume shop 58' Tele a lot.
I love the Seymour Antiquity Alnico 2's , freakin' great pickups! Also, have a guitar with Phat Cat Pickup & one with 59 & Jazz , great pickup!
When i play with any of the "guitar hero's"you mentioned or others we play together and interact , we both solo and play rhythm to support each others playing.

Re: Live Hangout - Come Join Oz Noy

I think each of us play different enough that we just each pickup stuff from each other.... its endless.

Re: Live Hangout - Come Join Oz Noy

I always try to play the gig! meaning what ever the gig /music needs with taking my ego out of it(at least as much as possible:)) i always try to play as good as i can!
Just enjoy playing! i always try to do my best and play as musical as possible... this whole "play each note like its the last note you'll ever play" bull**** is not my thing, i just try to do my best every time i play and most important is have a good time while playing music!

Re: Live Hangout - Come Join Oz Noy

I worked with Nile Rodgers about 10 years ago with Gavin Degraw when Gavin started his career, i only working with Cyndie Lauper twice, she's a freaking night mer to work with , complete nut!
I use Fender Guitars, mostly strat & Tele that Fender made for me , go to my gear page on my website, its all there.

Re: Live Hangout - Come Join Oz Noy

Still play the Bitter End NYC every Monday when i'm in town, i love that place. i wouldn't be able to make my solo records if i didn't have this gig!

I wrote my name on the wall! "The End is the beginning..."

Re: Live Hangout - Come Join Oz Noy

Oz! I follow your gig schedule. Haven't made it out to a show yet:( I notice you play with different bandmates quite often, mostly well known pros. Your songs have some complicated arrangements. You all must have dense schedules. Do you get to rehearse much for these gigs, especially the weekly stuff? I would be even more impressed to find out that you maniacs play these songs with little rehearsal.

Looking forward to "twisted v. 2"

Re: Live Hangout - Come Join Oz Noy

I do use different players BUT its usually the same few guys so its not as many as you think.
Playing my music is not as complicated as you think, once you get the idea of a song its really not that bad at all...i hate rehearsals and get real board with it, we rehears very little, usually only if we have to study a new song, we just get it together the more we play live.

Re: Live Hangout - Come Join Oz Noy

Thanks for sharing that. I love the loose feel you maintain even on the studio recordings. I play your live album for my kids in the car. It's part of our brainwashing routine.
