Live Vocals. Preamps&Compression. Suggestions?

Hey guys. This is definitely more of a live sound question, but I figured I'd ask here. Just wondering if anyone:

A. Brings their own vocal mic preamp/compressor to gigs?

B. Does anyone know of a good, cheap, durable one that will compress the vocals nicely.

I'm asking because there have been plenty of gigs where my vocals are only audible if I'm literally eating the microphone. And I've had audience members say this too. It's as if the vocals are only audible if you utilize the mic's close-proximity effect, but the vocals drop off significantly if you back off.

In addition, with some good vocal compression, you don't have to constantly push as hard to be heard, and you can save your voice and not wear it out, as well as use more loud/soft dynamics.

Now, at practice with my band in my home studio, I have a compresser set up, and I have a much larger "sweet spot" around the mic. (I'd say a good 6" imaginary sphere around the mic, if you imagine that.) And you don't have to eat the mic to get heard.

The unit I'm using is an Art Tube PAC. Not the greatest unit, but if you tweak it right, it sounds great. I'm just concerned with bringing a tube unit to gigs.

anyone else notice the same problem? Anyone know of a great little live box that can be used, up on stage, to set some good compression?

Anyone know of any potention problems you'd run into, besides a disgruntled sound guy?
