Locking Nuts

The Gotoh GE-1996TCK Floyd comes with a 43mm GLH-2 locking nut, but does anyone know what the stock JT580 Low Pro on the Jackson KVX10 comes with & if the string spacing between the 2 is the same?
Also i hear some of the Jacksons with the JT580 Lo Pro bridges have a higher locking nut than the Original Floyd Designed Bridges. Is this the case with the JT580 on the KVX10 King V & has anyone had experience with this?

Lastly does anyone know the string spacing on the Gotoh GE-1996TCK & the Jackson JT580 Lo Pro? I'm trying to compare the 2 so i can stay with the same setup i have now, but with better hardware. Also it'll save me encountering problems due to my technical ignorance when i do the swap.

Re: Locking Nuts

my 2 cents is it sounds like the nut you say is stock with a Gotoh Trem is an R2 copy and is meant for a narrow nut like on a vintage Fender... Jackson nut widths are more likely wider... 1 11/16th is most common and larger in some cases...

Re: Locking Nuts

hmm... doing some reseach 41.27mm is vintage spec 1 5/8's

and 44mm is 1 11/16th's...

As far as i know the Gotoh locking nuts come in 2 sizes. The FGR-2C 41mm & the GHL-2C 43mm.
I'm wondering whether leaving the stock locking nut that came on my Jackson is gonna cause problems due to string spacing issues or something like that. Because i'd assume the JT580 & JT580 Low Pro bridges may have a different string spacing to the other Original Floyd Designs such as Gotoh & Schaller. I'd prefer to go with the better quality Gotoh locking nut than leave the stock one on though, but from what you're saying, that may be a problem aswell. Also like i said earlier, aparently the OFR locking nuts sit higher than the ones that come stock on a lot of Jacksons & i hear it requires some sanding on the neck to make it fit right...not something i wanna go doing.
Arrggghhh the confusion, so much messing around just to get the right set up.

Re: Locking Nuts

i can also add i had a FRO added to my 1995-ish Performer series Reverse Dinky by a tech that normally did great work... but he added the Floyd in the same stud holes as the original Jackson lowpro copy was in and the guitar would not intonate... The low E and G saddles would not travel far enough back... when i asked the tech what happened he said the Holes must be drilled closer to the neck then a FRO... Smack for trying to pull a fast one on me... it was a piss poor snow job and i never used his services again....

i think the cheaper Jackson trem posts are routed closer to the neck, more for a Schaller soft metal base spec floyd... just guessing really but that is my hunch... The soft base floyds are mounted ever so slightly closer to the neck... Oneday i'm going to have to plug and redrill my way to get my Jackson to work with my FRO

Zerberus is the Jackson specialist on this form... look him up

Yeah i hear ya, that's pretty much what i'm talking about, to upgrade to something more stable & better qualty is a looota messin round. You have string spacing issues, lock nut, issues intonation issues...
Zerberus did say in one of my other threads that the Gotoh & OFR should just simply drop in, in place of the JT580 Lo Pro with no mods or anything required. But then what you're saying about your experience may contradict that.

Re: Locking Nuts

Leave the original locking nut in, it will fit the neck radius better and the quality difference between locking nuts is almost negligible.

The only reason Whofan had intonation issues after putting in an OFR on a Jackson Performer is that the performers used JT-500 trems which are Schaller copies and need the posts drilled farther forwwards as a result of the longer baseplate. Unfortunately they´re also recesseed routed for the Schaller size trem, meaning to fit on OFR properly would require filling the rout so as to have enough meat to hold the posts.

Again, swapping out the JT-580LP for an OFR or Gotoh will leave a gap around the trem and that´s it.

The only current Jacksons this will not work on are the JS series as those are the only ones that still use the JT-500. But an OFR also costs more than the whole guitar, so it would be a bit of a senseless upgrade anyway ;)
