Locking tuners on an acoustic

Well I guess that make me just the laziest person ever
Or at least that was my buddy's take when I told him

Grover 506 locking tuners I think that's right
On my Martin 000CE1

I had put Martin Light strings on it and the action changed
and it became almost unplayable
High action and such

Buddy told me to swap back to the extra lights
He was right . Now it's back to playing like an electric

changing strings are just so easy now
I so hate the multiple wraps and the constant stretching
and taking two days to "settle in"

I wonder if this would work with a medium bluegrass gauge set of strings. I love locking tuners (guess that makes me lazy, too)!

I think those look great, and that's a really sharp looking Martin. I played a lot of Martins that I really liked along with quite a few others before choosing my Taylor.

My Taylor W14ce came with really nice Gotoh 510 1:21 antique gold tuners... and they work and look great. However, I wanted locking tuners as well, but that looked exactly like these... because I love how they look. I don't mind normal tuners or winding the strings, I just like locking tuners.

Well, I could find them on eBay and a couple of other places, but they had a thumbwheel lock like a Sperzel and I thought it looked clunky. So I checked the Gotoh Japan sight and they did have a locking tuner without the thumbwheel that works just like the Grover locking tuner; insert string, turn and the internal cam turns and grabs the string.

I was a bit uncomfortable ordering from the site in Japan. So, I contacted the seller on eBay who had all the other Gotoh tuners for sale. He ordered them for me since he was a distributor and had them drop shipped to me. I got exactly what I wanted and someone to contact if there was an error. It set me back $110 and took 6 weeks, but it was worth it to me.

So I don't think it's lazy at all to put them on an acoustic. If it improves tuning stability and you like it, that's all that matters.

Interesting! I've never seen locking tuners on a Martin. Although you can tell they aren't stock, they are very classy looking.

Have the guitar fully setup with Lights (Truss Rod, Nut and Saddle) Martins really respond to heavier strings, and with the correct setup it'll play great as well. (They come from the factory with a very high action setup, so that the player can have it setup to their preference)

Other than the weight of some of them, I don't know why locking tuners everywhere haven't become more popular. Well-designed ones are wonderful, and cut string changing time in half. I guess tradition is tough to shake.

I was really hesitant to swap the Martin branded tuners

But I looked and measured and the Grover was a drop in replacement
Even the screw matched the original
In fact the screw is the original. I put the same ones right back in the same holes

I thought about some of the other brands
But like ya'll said these Grovers just look like they belong there

I plan to stash the old ones in the case

I haven't noticed the neck dive
Or any brightness or bassyness
Other than the new strings
They stretched in really quick and are still holding tune well

Sadly, I don't think many acoustic guitar companies would go down that road. Tradition is a hard road to beat.
