locking tuners or klusons for strat w/ vintage trem?

Re: locking tuners or klusons for strat w/ vintage trem?

t's the huge lock wheel on the back that looks bad on a CBS headstock. Oddly enough, I like it on regular size strat headstocks...

I don't know if that is odd. But it is certainly retarded. ;)

Re: locking tuners or klusons for strat w/ vintage trem?

got a lead on a good price for some locking tuners (Sperzels), for the "Hiroshima Mon Amour" strat rebuild and wondered if it'd be better to go with vintage klusons or locking tuners?

I'm not a huge trem user, but have gotten into it a bit after building a Jazzmaster and loving the ability to add a little vibrato to chords, etc. so I want this strat to be set up to do the same amount of vibrato and stay in tune.

If I keep the appropriate amount of wraps (i.e. not too many) on the klusons, do you think they'd be the better choice? Or should I opt for the Sperzels? Would be about the same price ($45). The trem is a gotoh vintage strat trem, and would be set up with 10-46 tuned down to Eb.

I have a set of Sperzels on my Strat & I use a Vintage Trem. I also have the Graphtech Ferraglides as saddles & I have a graphite nut. My preference is to adjust the trem to rest on the body, but with this type of setup you can actually set it to float and maintain good tuning stability. Its a good system & the Strat still feels & plays like a Strat.

Here's a close up of the headstock & as you can see I think it looks pretty sexy!

Here's a shot of the whole guitar! Very cool!

Just for purposes of side-by-side comparison...

Sperzel #5 buttons (standard) on Dave's Strat:

Sperzel #6 buttons (smaller and more rounded) on my Strat:

Re: locking tuners or klusons for strat w/ vintage trem?

i have sperzels on my strat, but i want to mention to the OP that locking tuners do not increase tuning stability with a trem. They just make string changes faster. If you want to stay in tune, by all means get whatever tuners you like, but give careful attention to the nut. Self lubricating tusq, bone etc are both good, plastic is bad. Roller nuts (ive tried 2 types) are okay- the newer fender ones are better than the older wilkinson ones. I reckon a really well cut traditional nut and regular lubrication with nut sauce or similar is the biggest determinant of tuning stability with trems.

But ya need ta show the fugly backside of those boat anchor Sperzels on a Strat ; sure, from the front it looks all the same as any other tuners pretty much except for vintage stock button keys.

This one will have a graphtech tusq XL nut on it. I think I'm just going to use the tuners I already have, but use the string lock method that ItsABass showed. I can save the funds I woulda spent on tuners for more important stuff, like beer!

What in blazes are you talking about? I posted to show the differences between two of Sperzel's button types, not to say that it "looks all the same as any other tuners," or to make any comment about how the back side looks. I was making a point about how the button type makes a difference in the looks.

If you are calling Sperzels "boat anchors," then you've never actually used a set. They are the lightest high-quality sealed tuners I've ever used.

Ive got Sperzels on two or three of my assemblies. Thye are ungodly big fugly monsters , no matter what you say. Its not like we cant take what is said here and expound on it. Maybe not from the front are the so bad.. So are Schaller...Schallers are the heaviest I think though though, but Schalelrs are steel arent they?. Schallers are a better tuner hands down .
Sperzels tend to come apart..maybe not all, but one of them in six, and thier design is meant that they should not come apart. Thats been my expereince.
I have Sperzels on a couple of my Guitars. Great tuners, make no mistake about it, I think I have Sperzels on my Jackson and a Warmoth Strat.
Yeah, the Sperzels are sort of heavy casue they are so bulky, even though they are Aluminum. Im notpicking, becasue Im such a perfectionist though, and believe a bunch of littel things like tuner weight add up on a guitar that your trying to build for a certain classic tone.
If i wasnt hobbling around on crutches from losing my right leg..er, temporaily from meniscus repair..haha, Id post some of my 20 guitars with different lockers; Wilkinson, Sperzel, Schaller, Gotoh, Grover, Kluson, Hipshot, and my impressions.
