Lollar Guitar Pickups?

I currently own a Gibson SG, and have heard a lot of hype about the Lollar Pickups, thanks to Gearmandude haha. I was considering switching over my Custom 5 in the bridge to a High-Wind Imperial. I love how it sounds, it's just a little too bright for my tastes. I was wondering what your guys' opinions would be on my situation? I also have a 59' in the neck.

Re: Lollar Guitar Pickups?

The Lollar Imperials I have are the ultimate mellow PAFs. Think "women tone". No lame or anything but it fits.

However, they are PAF-class (awg42) pickups, your C5 is medium wind (awg43). So you'd get a different kind of bright.

Putting A2 in the C5 will kill the brightness real.

Re: Lollar Guitar Pickups?

I have a set of Imperials in one of my guitars. They are fantastic! Very open sounding and neutral, very dynamic. Amazing in every aspect ... aside from price lol. They will not be bright at all, though of course it depends on other factors such as your amp, effects, etc. I have them in an Agile AL2500 with an ash cap and maple fingerboard on mahogany body/neck. I had a pair of Bare Knuckle Black Dogs in there, but they did not suit the guitar at all. I took a chance on the Lollars and it worked perfect!

In an SG, I think that the Imperials would sound very good. A comparable pickup that I know well would be a Bare Knuckle Riff Raff in the bridge and a Stormy Monday in the neck. The BK set will have more push than the Lollars, but the Stormy Monday would definitely be sweeter sounding than the '59, if you find it to be too bright ...

That's why I'm interested in them. I love playing classic and new rock and roll and I just love the clarity out of the pickup, which is why I considered the lollars as a replacement for the C5 and possibly even 59 when I can afford it lol. I've never heard of Bare Knuckle but I'll definitely check them out.

Re: Lollar Guitar Pickups?

The Custom 5 is bright. It's not my favorite Duncan. I like the Duncan Custom better but my favorite for a warmer tone and a more vintage tone would be the Antiquity.
I'd go that route or Seth Lovers in an SG. I like covers on my humbuckers - warms up the tone, IMO, and sounds "right" to me.

Re: Lollar Guitar Pickups?

I have tweaked the knobs on my guitar and amplifier and it has good tone, it's just bright for the SG. A lot more high end IMO than the low end.

The C5 lacks midrange and so do SG's...

Try something with more mids

I mean if you want to go to a Lollar thats all good, pickups are a very personal thing to me, I've just never played a Lollar that I loved...

Right. Alnico 2. Like Seth Lovers or Antiquitys or you could put an A2 magnet in your Custom 5 and have a Custom Custom but that might be to warm and buttery. Worth a try though. You might like it.

Yeah I never thought of putting an alcino 2 in the C5, I do agree that both that pickup and my SG lack midrange. Pedals have been making up for it but though. The A2's tonality might be why I was intrigued by the Lollars in the first place.

Put an A8 in the C5 and you have the most recommended pair of PU's here for SG's: C8/'59N. Warmer and fuller than a C5. If you want more dynamics and an even warmer sound, try an UOA5. You can get what you want from your Custom, all you have to do is change the magent.

Re: Lollar Guitar Pickups?

Not a fan of Lollarpups.

I order three (3) for a special guitar and the middle was suppose to be RWRP but it was shipped wrong NWNP.

I called and wrote Lollar and got the runaround, e.g., send it back because that is the way we always make them (Ignored my writhed PO instructions) and it will take about 4~6 weeks for a rewind.

Screw Lollar’s sale and support - it was there mistake, I changed to to an off the shelf SD with the correct RWRP winding and could not be happier.

Re: Lollar Guitar Pickups?

If the Custom magent swap isn't what you're looking for, try www.wolfetone.com

If you're looking for boutique handwound, Wolfe's prices are very reasonable, he has astounding customer service, and most importantly, his pickups kick all kinds of ass. He made me a set of his P90s for an SG Supreme, and it's fantastic. He's making me a set of his Blisterbucker/Grey Wolf for my other SG Supreme.

Call him and tell him what you're looking for, and he'll be able to suggest a design for ya.

Re: Lollar Guitar Pickups?

But the Wolfetone I had didn't have anything in common with my Lollars.

Whether you like the Imperials are not, one thing is sure: they sound like no other pickups do.

Does anyone have a comparison between the C5 and the C5 w/ A8 magnets for the difference? All the videos I've seen with pup comparison have barely any change accept a little more clarity.
