Lollar pickups?

Hello all.

Anyone try Lollar's pickups?

I was browsing that company's page and came across a Charlie Christian for Tele lead pickup that's very interesting to me. What do you guys think about Lollar's build quality? Is there a general character to their pickups? Do they let the voice of the guitar go through (like Duncan and Zhangbucker), or do they impart more of their tone (like Dimarzio)?

Thanks.

Re: Lollar pickups?

Jason Lollar is generally regarded to be the pickup guru. I know that Seth Lover, Leo Fender and of course Seymour Duncan are all legends in the business but Jason Lollar is a genius and a very details-oriented experimenter/developer. It is due to the quality of his products and his vast amount of knowledge that made his pickup winding book an incredibly sought-after piece of 'required reading' for many guitar makers and pickup winding enthusiasts. Many 'small name' winders used Jason's book as the blueprint to starting their own businesses.

Re: Lollar pickups?

Hi, Lollar wrote a book about some 20 years ago. It was out of print until half year ago. Old copies went for 100 bucks on fleabay. He is cult.
I have a Imperial Humbucker. His philosopy is to tweak the the gauss of the magnet after the pickup is ready. His humbucker dont sound typically like A5, they sound softer, warm and organic like old wood. They remind me a bit on Ants, but stronger and more boldness while retaining warmth and woodiness. Its his very own sound IMO

Re: Lollar pickups?

Jason is up to pair with Seymour Duncan in knowledge 'bout p'ups.

He's one of the finest craftmen in the business. He's mostly best known for his restoring and rewinding of strange old p'ups; respecting original specs, materials, processes and all that.

The p'ups he winds are made with the best possible materials and parts. He'll make many of his own parts if what's available is not up to his standards. He also makes many specialized p'ups nobody else makes.

You can't go wrong dealing with him.

HTH,

Re: Lollar pickups?

Jasons stuff is high quality and he uses great materals but I do not care for most of the Lollar pickups I have tried. Every winder has their own idea of what a pickup shoudl sound like, they all have their favorite old Strat and Tele pickups, they have a fav set of PAF's, etc...

Jasons pickups, thus far to me are just not what I want to hear...not bad by any means and I wudl use them but they would not be my first choice by a long shot.

All that said, the one Lollar that interests me based simply on clips that I have not tried for real yet is his CC...I want to try one in the neck position of one of my Tele's.

Re: Lollar pickups?

i put a neck lollar cc in a tele for a guy and had it for a week to play with it. it was a cool pup but not really my thing. much better than a typical tele neck pup but id still rather have an antiquity II mini humbucker in the neck
