Who uses long plate tubes vs short plate? I personally prefer long plate tubes. They are less compressed and have a bit more percussive bass in my opinion....

I honestly don't know the difference. How do you tell if a tube is long or short plate?

Re: Long plate vs short plate tubes..who uses what and why

look at the plates :)

short plates typically have less noise and are less prone to microphonics but i think thats due to stiffer components rather than the size of the plate. i use the one that sounds best for the application

Long plate on the left, short plate on the right. On RCA tubes, long plates are easier to recognize because they are also black.

Huh. Experimentation has led me to use two old long plate RCA tubes in the preamp and a short plate Sovtek in the PI. After the RCAs, the next closest sounding preamp tubes would be short plate JJs though . . . so I'm not sure it really matters?

It does not "matter".
It has become one of those meaningless catch-phrases, like:
American
British
Organic
As already mentioned.....More and Bigger components have a Theoretical/Statistical propensity to be or become micro-phonic.
