So my Dad is a carpenter. He used to buld tug-boats and all sorts of marine vessels. He now builds furniture and anything else you can imagine. He built 6 or 7 pieces of furniture that are in my home. Just an amazing craftsman.
So, he decided to build me a guitar for Christmas. He knows that I'm a big golfer (I've run a golf tournament for the last 15 years benefiting the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp) so he decided to build me a golfer's guitar with real golf balls from many of the places I've played, including a number of courses taht we've played the tournament at over the years.
Being a carpenter, you'd thnk he would have built it from wood, but not my dad...
Knowing nothing specifically about guitars, he decided to use a cheap-o guitar as the basis of his measurements. He took it apart and checked out where everything goes, the depth of the neck pocket, etc. He even tried to route out the original body to put in some golf balls that he had cut in half(see last picture) but he didn't like how it turned out... which led him to create a jig for the body that he used to pour some kind of acrylic/epoxy to form the body.
In the body are encased actual full-size golf balls. As you can imagine, the body is about as thick as a Les Paul. And it is solid acyrlic/golf ball! He meant for it to be a wall hanger, but I played it all last night.
THE SUCKER IS HEAVY!!! Must be 25 pounds. I was playing with it last night trying to get the action and intonation right. It might need a little shaving in the neck pocket, but it played half-way decent. Check it out!
The weight of the body was such that he was worried that the neck wouldn't be able to hold it, so he fashioned an extra-large neck plate to add some stability. He also didn't like the black pickguard (he wanted you to be able to see through it) so he cut a clear one and added a smoke tint from a window tinting kit. It looks like graphite. Anyway... crazy!
