Re: Looking at a semi-hollow... thoughts?

The first & the third one look nice, especially the one with P-90's. What's the retail price, and do they use decent woods? Some cheap guitars use pine and the quality of materials & workmanship is pretty poor. Check them out to see if the quality is on a par with Epiphone.

Price of these guitars are $300 or less.

Re: Looking at a semi-hollow... thoughts?

My favourite of what you've posted is the Artcore AS-83, with the Sheraton a close second.

The Epi Dot is my fav of the import semi-hollows though.

I really like those PRS SE's but it's probably not what you're looking for.

Re: Looking at a semi-hollow... thoughts?

Stay away from anything GFS sells.

My experience over the past two years has been quite disappointing with them. PM me and I'll be glad to tell you about it.

Re: Looking at a semi-hollow... thoughts?

I got a wild jazz hair this past winter and bought an Artcore. LOVE IT!!! Put a JB/59 pair of chrome covered pickups in there and it's perfect. Awesome playability. Great looks. Though that jazz hair comes and goes, I still dig the Artcore a lot.

Re: Looking at a semi-hollow... thoughts?

Whatever I get, I was planning on trying the Jimmy Page wiring with an open coil zebra at the bridge and a nickel or black at the neck.

Re: Looking at a semi-hollow... thoughts?

This is not a surgical operation, and does not require any special skills or experience. If you're able to dress yourself & drive to work, you can change PU's & pots in a F hole guitar.

Someone mention surgery?

Always prep the operating field!

Get the Epi, stick a set of Seth's in it.

Or Classic 57's.

I really love my Sheraton II especially with the Classic 57's I put in. It sounds really nice.

I've heard good things about the Ibanez though.

Re: Looking at a semi-hollow... thoughts?

If the Sheraton was good enough for the boogie man aka John Lee Hooker it's good enough for me and you (as long as you change the pups).

Do it with a Triple Shot set for the series/parallel/split coil stuff and 2 x push/pulls for the OOP and series/parallel between pickups stuff.

Well, that Sheraton is a very different thing than what you can buy today. The Sheraton is basically all maple which is really not the best for semi hollows IMO

Re: Looking at a semi-hollow... thoughts?

So, everything comes out the one F-hole? Hmm...

Yup. You do all the wiring and what not outside the guitar and then stuff it back in. There's enough room for pots to go back in and some guitars have 'twist-ties' on the underside to help hold wires so the f-holes look nice and clean.

So the best thing to do is make a card board layout of the f holes and wire up the pots and pups while on the cardboard so you know how everything will look. Might save you time once you go to put everything back inside.

Re: Looking at a semi-hollow... thoughts?

I'd like to throw my 2 cents in that the Epiphone Dot is a decent semi-hollow with some new pickups.

I have a Dan Erlwine re-wiring DVD and he goes thru the bridge pick up cavity.

Disclaimer: Dan makes everything look super easy. Punk. :28:

Disclimer #2: You can do that on full hollowbodies, but semi's usually only have small holes drilled in the center block for the wires, and you can't pull pots thru them.
