Looking for 8 Ohm Eminence Cannabis Rex

Snake Aces

Singlecut Slut
I may have found somebody (guitarfeak here on the Duncan forums) to split my Yorkville Traynor YCV50 Blue into a separate head. As a result, I'm having a 1x12 cab built with my current Cannabis Rex speaker. However, I'd love to add a second 1x12 with another Cannabis Rex to have a full 1x12 stack for the YCV50 Blue head.

If anyone is trying to sell a C-Rex, hit me up.

I don't have a spare C. Rex, but love the idea of what you're doing here. I've got a Traynor YCV40WR and am running a C. Rex in the open back cab and the V30 in the extension cab and it sounds great. Was wondering if you're running your C. Rex in a closed back or open back cab and if you've tried it both ways. I think I might like the sound of this amp better into closed back cabs.

I currently have three C-Rex speakers in operation. I like using two amps simultaneously. I use an ABY pedal to run my guitar signal to two amps.

One is the Traynor YCV50 Blue. It is still the open-back design in the combo amp format at the moment. I do use KT77 tubes in it instead of EL34s. It has the Cannabis Rex in it, which has been in the amp since 2016. Before that, I was using that C-Rex in a Laney Cub12R over in Europe for a few years. I love that speaker.

As for the other amp, I have a 2x12 closed back loaded with C-Rex speakers hooked up to a Hughes & Kettner GrandMeister 40 Deluxe.

As a result, I have a very big-sounding tone as it is. However, having the 2x12 C-Rex cab combined with the curiosity of separating the YCV50 from the speaker to reduce spring reverb rattle at higher volumes has made me yearn for a closed-back connected to the Traynor YCV50.

I ran the YCV50 in the middle of a room for practice for almost a decade. Obviously I love the amp, so, it sounded okay to me. Then, in 2020, I got the 2x12 and realized there is something different about the C-Rex coming through that cab. I would argue a tighter, more defined bass tone, and just a warmer overall mid range (in a good way to me, classic humbucker guitar warmth that I love), among other things.

So, I moved the open-back YCV50 into a corner to kinda mock a closed-back cab, and I love the results. Now I want to try an actual closed-back cab and while I'm at it, I want to add a second closed-back 1x12 cab to give the YCV50 a full-stack experience by using two 1x12s.

I am going to have the cab builder make the bottom cab with wheels and the top cab able to securely stack on top of it and go from there.

At that point, my guitar rig will feature 4 total 12-inch C-Rex speakers run through two amps. Give me that over a single 4x12 running through a single amp any day of the week.

I find the YCV50 to just be an old-school tube amp machine. It just sounds so vintage on the clean channel but it can really dial in a nice rock and hard rock tone effortlessly. I really dig it, but when combined with the more modern H&K, suddenly I have this guitar tone that is very unique to my ears. I've never heard anything like it before.

So, I'm hopeful this idea of mine will add to my current formula in a positive way.

That's cool!

I've been using the YCV40 for close to 20 years now, mostly on the clean channel and then running pedals for more rock-y sounds. I actually got an email from one of the guys at Traynor who told me how to modify the circuit for EL34s (there's just one resistor you've got to swap apparently) but have been too chicken to do it because I don't want to mess up the cleans.

I was wondering about the C. Rex in a closed back cab. The v30 closed back cab sounds lovely with the amp, but wasn't sure if the Rex would end up too bassy. Sounds like it is worth trying.

i like the crex in a closed back cab. i have a mojotone 1x12 that ive put a few different speakers in, including a crex. the bass is maybe more focused? not boomy, but still there.

I feel like the bass is big but with more clarity in a closed-back (using humbuckers, mostly WLH, A2P, and Jazz Duncans).

I used to have two YCV40s (one unmodified, the other with KT77s). My old bandmate had the same one you have. The YCV40 is a great amp for cleans. It's a great amp overall. Traynor is seriously underrated. People don't know the great tube tone they could have for pennies with Traynor amps compared to a Fender, Marshall, or Mesa tube amp.

But, I had never heard a Traynor through a closed-back until I hooked my YCV50 up to my 2x12 and I was hooked.

I dialed my bass down a bit on the YCV50 through the 2x12 and it was good. I'd have to look, but I think my bass is set just before 12 o'clock on both my H&K and my Traynor. So, it's not like I scoop the bass or anything like that.

One thing I've learned about the C-Rex is that it loves high volumes. It shines the louder you set the amp while trying to use a soft touch (for me my touch gets heavy when performing, it's a life-long battle for me so far) but when I'm jammin alone, I can nail it.

When I began considering ditching the YCV50 combo for a separate head, I just couldn't say goodbye to the YCV50 potential. So, my vision of having the combo amp separated into a head/cab became my only option to be content.

I'm looking forward to it while hoping my cab builder is still in business. I sent him an email yesterday and am waiting for a response. Once I figure out the cabs, I will take the CRex out of the YCV50 and send the amp to guitarfeak.

I originally talked to a shop near Minneapolis who is a certified Traynor repair facility and great place to get any Traynor amp when they have them. They even let players rent the Traynor amps and purchase them if they want to.

Anyway, they told me they do not have interest in separating the amp for me so I started asking around. I have a few pedals guitarfeak has repaired for me over the years so I decided to ask him about the amp. He is going to see what he can do. I'm excited!

My cab builder got back to me. I'm stoked! He is awesome, so if anybody ever needs a custom cab builder who has great pricing, I know the guy. He's out in Cali.

He presented me with like 4 or 5 different 1x12 cab sizes to choose from. Since the amp head will be about 23-inches wide (presuming it's not wider in the end), I went with a 24-inch wide, 12-inch deep, and 16-inch tall design for both 1x12 cabs.

The wheels are officially in motion now...
