Looking for a bridge HB to use with amps/fx set up primarily for single coils

Hi everyone, first time poster here.

I need some opinions, perhaps somebody has been through something similar.

I currecntly have a JB in the bridge position of my Fender Custom Tele FMT (although tele-shaped, it's a mahogany-bodied, maple capped guitar with a set neck - not a million miles away from a Les Paul tonally). Although I'm sure the JB works very well in some setups, it doesn't for me. Here's why:

I'm mainly a single coil guy and 80% of the time I play an ash-bodied tele with Lindy Fralin Stock Tele pickups. Those pups are relatively bright even by single coil standards (without being ice-picky, at least to my ears). So I choose my equipment/settings that mostly work well with bright single coils. My smallest amp - the Fender Pro Junior - gets used most often, because I love both the tone and the portability. I use pedals for dirt, mostly an Xotic SL Drive and a Carl Martin AC Tone. On those occasions when I fancy myself some humbucker tones, I plug in my FMT Tele, but the JB seems to be the wrong pickup for my use. I know it's supposed to be a bright pup, but with my gear it lacks definition and top end. It sounds like it's all mids (the wrong kind of mids for me), no treble. With my setup, it's usable only with a lot of gain from my SL Drive.

So I'm looking for a bridge pickup that might work better with gear set up for single coils. Medium gain hard-rock tones are what I'd use it for most of the time, but usability for low-gain or even clean playing is a must for me in any guitar. I'm mainly a rhythm player and note separation and clarity in chords/riffs are my primary concerns. I'm NOT looking for a HB that sounds like a single coil, or I wouldn't bother with a HB guitar in the first place. I do want that extra fatness and output that HBs provide, just more "compatible" when swapping with a SC equipped tele mid-gig with little or no adjustment to the amp/pedals.

Has anybody successfully solved a similar problem? I imagine HSS strat guys might have something to say about this. I guess I'm looking for something fairly low-output, but the frequency response is more important to me than output (that's easy for me to compensate for with a clean boost or something).

I'll be very grateful for any input from you guys. All pickup recommendations are greatly appreciated, but because I live in Europe, widely available models by "mainstream" brands like SD, Dimarzio or Gibson are preferred.

Thanks in advance!

Jazz, Screamin' Demon, EJ Custom.

Elepe, thanks for the suggestions! The Jazz is my favorite neck HB so far, so I should have figured the bridge version might work for me!

Keep 'em coming!

Checked out some online demos of the Screamin Demon and EJ Custom and judging from those, they do have superior clarity to the JB. Thanks again!

Any other suggestions (and perhaps why they might be suitable)?

The Jazz & Demon would be great choices. Even a Phat Cat or Pearly Gates might be a good choices here. Remember, you can directly compare up to 4 pickups with our website's new compare function.

Funny you should mention the Pearly Gates. Some versions of the FMT tele came stock with it. Mine had a Fender Atomic Humbucker, whatever that is. I liked the pickup more than the JB, but it hummed almost like a single coil. An uneven wind perhaps. I would have kept it in the guitar, but couldn't tolerate the hum. Call me old-fashioned, but I expect a humbucker, well, to buck the hum.

Ha ha, so the best bridge humbucker is a single coil? Now that's a thought! :)

The Mean 90 is fantastic on HSS strats, or H-T teles.

However, a more versatile solution is to run a low output humbucker with separate volume controls for the bridge and neck pickups.

500k for the bridge, 250k for the neck. Or you can go crazy and hunt down concentric stacked pots.

Interesting! The concentric pot would be my only choice though if I wanted to go down that road. The FMT tele has only one volume pot and one tone pot...

Re: Looking for a bridge HB to use with amps/fx set up primarily for single coils

Nah.

1)Remove capacitor from tone pot
2)Change pot to 500k audio taper (if pot is 250k)
3)Wire each pickup to a pot
4)Turn Treble knob on amp counterclockwise to taste
5)Done

OK then, that could be done. Thanks!

Re: Looking for a bridge HB to use with amps/fx set up primarily for single coils

I realize that because I nearly always use my tone pot on full with my humbucker equipped guitars, I can live without a tone pot.

Anyway, keep the suggestions coming, the ones I've gotten so far have been really interesting!

I haven't used the Jazz bridge, but the Demon works amazingly well with single coils or in an HSS setup.

Re: Looking for a bridge HB to use with amps/fx set up primarily for single coils

I've just remembered I have a neck version of the SH1 lying around. How well do you guys think it would work in the bridge position, keeping in mind I'm looking for a fairly bright, low output sound (in combination with my beloved SH2 in the neck position)?

Re: Looking for a bridge HB to use with amps/fx set up primarily for single coils

The SH-1n would be very bright and thin sounding in the bridge position. It for sure wouldn't be my choice.

The Demon with 500k pot would be my first choice. The 59/C hybrid would also be good.

I really love the Mean 90. Great, full, rich sound with that P-90 snap and bite. But if you didn't like the hum from an unbalance humbucker, you won't like a p-90...it has much more hum than that.

Re: Looking for a bridge HB to use with amps/fx set up primarily for single coils

Well, perhaps I'm sweating the hum thing too much. After all, I use standard tele pickups most of the time and don't mind the hum that much. It's just that this guitar is supposed be (among other things) a "problem solver" on those rare occasions when I need to use a lot of gain. It's probably only then that the hum would be an issue...

Re: Looking for a bridge HB to use with amps/fx set up primarily for single coils

I would say a Sreamin' Demon should work. This video really turned me onto the Demon.

I hope this helps you out.

Cole, it sure does! Not only because it proves the Demon has excellent clarity, but also because for some reason I thought they didn't sell one with a nickel/chrome cover. They apparently do, which is great, because for aesthetic reasons I prefer covered pickups in this guitar.

So many of you have recommended me the Demon that I'd basically feel stupid if I didn't try it out. I wonder why I've overlooked it for so long. Perhaps it's because to me, the name implies metal, and although I'm sure it's good for metal too, it's apparently much more than that. It's similarly misleading as calling the SH2 "Jazz".

Speaking of the Jazz, it's probably going to be my neck pickup of choice in the foreseeable future, although the demos of the Pearly Gates sound great too. In fact they seem no less bright, just different. I'm really interested in comparisons of the two (Jazz and PG) in the neck position, but I should probably start a new thread for that.

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions! This thread has been really informative and I hope it helps others who find themselves solving a similar puzzle.
And of course, more opinions can't hurt, so...
