Looking for a brutally clean amp...

Why go tube if you want brutally clean?

I guess I should clarify that I don't want a "clinical" sounding clean tone...a little breakup at high volumes wouldn't be too bad.

MRID!!!! ... Where you been man? Haven't seen you around the forum in a long time..... :headbang:

Re: Looking for a brutally clean amp...

Check the ENGL 50 in any of its versions. I have a ENGL 50 Thunder which is a combo with a 12'' speaker and a spring reverb. Cleans are great, warm and detailed, with lots of headroom. The reverb it is quiet with a very good quality.

If you want to hear some great clips of this amp seek for "Marinblues" in the tips and clips section.

Mrid,

GLAD TO SEE YOU BRO!!! On to your question. I play through a Fender Twin Reverb, it is killer amp and is very clean...that Ampeg is far cleaner but...here is the ony real down fall. The tubes in an Ampeg are pretty pricey! 12DW7's are pricey and can NOT be subed for anything else, this is also true for 6CG7's...but I belive that either EH or Sovtek are making both of them again. I used to have an old V4-B, which had 7027's (this was before you could but new 7027's again), I paid almost $200.00 for a PAIR, of them and I got an amazing deal! either EH or Sovtek are making them again, and I hear that they are pretty good...but still not cheep. The point is that I would check the availibity of ALL the tubes before you get it (I think that the 12DW7's, the 6CA7's, and the 7027's are now being made by Sovtek/EH, and everything else is pretty standard...but Im not 100%). @ other things you might wanna know...Ampegs have a funny sounding Reverb, it's not a bad sounding reverb, it just sounds kinda funky and different. Also, Ampega have a pretty "dark" quality to them...they are not very bright and sometimes it's not something you can EQ out without using outboard gear...they are just tuned to have a dark tonal quality. good luck bro, let us know if you do get it.

Re: Looking for a brutally clean amp...

Just looked at the pics closer...6K11's might be a real pain to find! I would e-mail the seller and get a full tube list, then findout about the cost and the reality of a full re-tube, and base my decions on that.

Re: Looking for a brutally clean amp...

aren't Hiwatts the king of clean?

well, besides Twins?

One of the hard to find Ampeg tubes is now being re-made by JJ/Telsa. I'm not sure what one, but it's another place to check.

Re: Looking for a brutally clean amp...

1- Hiwatt (pricey)
2- Fender Twin Reverb
3- Roland JC120

Re: Looking for a brutally clean amp...

JC120's sound so sterile... ick.

Fender Twin reverbs are my faves for super, super clean stuff.

You can't beat a silverface twin for lots of volume, lush clean
tones and plenty of headroom. You can find them for around $700 too. It's the next big purchase for me.

Re: Looking for a brutally clean amp...

look up brutally clean in the dictionary and you'll find a picture of a Fender Twin Reverb.

I'm looking for something with a TON of headroom and volume, but I don't want to spend too much money. :laugh2:

How does this look?

If you want clean with a lot of headroom, and a lot of volume, it would be really hard to beat a Fender Twin Reverb. 80 watts 2 12" speakers 4 6L6. Another choice would be the Showman. This Amp is essentially a twin in a head format. The heads are pretty reasonable, but you will need a cabinet that comliments its "clean" sound. IF you want to hear this Clapton used these Amps on the Derek and the Dominos Live Album. Very Clean and very loud!

Re: Looking for a brutally clean amp...

All this twin talk is VERY true...Thats my main amp...and only amp at this point. But if you like the tone of the Ampegs, they are very clean, but they just have a different kind of sound.

Re: Looking for a brutally clean amp...

You might see if you can find a Musicman 112 from the 80's. They're annoyingly clean.
