Looking for a decent inexpensive distortion pedal

Re: Looking for a decent inexpensive distortion pedal

You playin’ me, loc?

Re: Looking for a decent inexpensive distortion pedal

Kind of hard to find as cheap now, but Krank Amps had a good thrash-box called Distortus Maximus,,,,,(and also the krankshaft as a juiced-od)

Re: Looking for a decent inexpensive distortion pedal

Blackstar HT-Dual

Used might run about $100 but well worth it.
I like this pedal so much that I have 3!!

Re: Looking for a decent inexpensive distortion pedal

I’d probably want a couple of pedals that could be used individually and stacked.

In the Joyo world is want a US Dream and Tube Overdrive. MXR world something like the Badass Distortion/78 Distortions and GT OD. The DOD Boneshaker looks like a ridiculous value. Also the TC Dark Matter and Mojo Mojo.

Re: Looking for a decent inexpensive distortion pedal

Saved so much money at ToysRus today! (well that's one way to look at it, even though I still spent $)
Skylanders stuff was marked down to .50 each! We snagged about 20 characters (trapforce/swapforce) and even paying full-price for a few Zelda items I was still waaaay under budget.

Enter the pawn shop right next to the Terre Haute Mall,,next to ToysRus. Well I rarely get over to the big city, and it was right there, and with basically all the other music-stores now gone,,,,,,,,,well I just had to have a quick look.

I'm a super specific guy on guitars and amps, so wasn't surprised at all that there wasn't anything of interest,,,,but there in the pedal case was a metalcore basically new w/box for $50. I took it home for $42 after tax.
Getting ready (slamming Heinekens lol) right at this moment to go try it through the triple-reborn cleans set to 150w, spongy, tube-recs,,,,,,,,,,,,and we'll go from there.

Just wanted a fun pedal to play around with at low volume late-night for the hyperfuzzmuff tones.
My triple's clean channel is also much more forgiving in the db-department, even set to 150w. The gain channels get vicious in a big hurry.

Every pedal I’ve tried for Metal seems to lack depth...

If you have a high wattage amp with an effects loop, try an Orange Micro Dark, and run the effects send into the effects return of your amp, using the orange as a preamp

We'll see if the metalcore lacks depth when i wake their a'''' up in about an hour from now (I'll be well warmed-up by then (and lit-up too for that matter) and have it somewhat dialed-in by then). lol 7am mesa-metalcore-madness ho ho ho,,,,,,,,and be thankful it'snot the drums!

Re: Looking for a decent inexpensive distortion pedal

^^^Well that was fun this morning before going to bed, of course after waking them up we did the gift thing.

After spinning knobs for about the whole hour I ended up with a very good tone IMO, but not quite what I was expecting.
Level, lows and highs all in the 9-10:00 range, and gain just past noon. This is basically a copy of my recto red-channel tone, only with less harmonics and less character.
As I suspected, through my clean channel with the pedal set as such it's easy to get the tone at super low volume.

I was actually hoping for a more fizzy knarled spitting-type distortion, but the metalcore gets sucky in a hurry when you go for that.
Maybe through pushed or raw mode, I'll have to fiddle with that later. At least now I have a boss pedal again for my boss adapter lol.

That TC Fangs sounds amazing to me in those videos I posted. Might buy one eventually then ditch the pedal I like less.
Been looking to snag a cheap little peavey or fender 112 from craigslist, so for that the pedal will serve well.

Have you tried the BOSS Mega Distortion? They can be found on the cheap and have a lot of bottom. They are a serious chug machine.

Just put in a bid for one on eBay...for $25! ($16 + 9 shipping).
If anyone wants to outbid me, go ahead - I do NOT need another distortion pedal but I can never resist anything under $30!

Update: some kind soul saved me from myself by outbidding me by a dime. Thank you stranger!

Re: Looking for a decent inexpensive distortion pedal

I had a Mega, a Metalzone, and an Ibanez Smashbox all at the same time many years ago.
The Mega was the thickest but also the most compressed and sludgy.
The Metalzone was the most adjustable but it was hard to get much bite without adding fizz.
Smashbox was thinner-toned, but it had the most clarity at deathgain levels, and I actually ended up using it the most with the gear I had at the time.

I'll have to get this Metalcore through a clean SS amp to really get a feel for how it compares. I had all those other pedals for many years.
Through my triple's clean it's very impressive, especially for fast alt-picking riffs and slicing leads.

Re: Looking for a decent inexpensive distortion pedal

I went on a search for an MD-2 after reading this. Snagged one for $30 w/free shipping on Reverb and I’m already jamming on it. Works great on a clean amp at low volume, looking forward to trying it out on a dirty amp with more headroom this week.

Re: Looking for a decent inexpensive distortion pedal

Some pedals in your price range that I've found to be awesome include: Proco Rat, Proco Solo, Joyo US Dream, Boss DS1 (especially one with the Keeley Mod)

Re: Looking for a decent inexpensive distortion pedal

Does anyone remember when an Arion Tubulator sold for $9.95 retail? I had two. Sold both. Now I regret it. Now, they're hard to find. Great pedal.
