This is not my amp, but I've owned two of these and this '82 model is one of the best sounding amps I have ever owned.

I used to own that identical amp and mine was an 83 model....I did a ton of cool mods inside of mine and it had the 65 watt speakers...Wish I didn't sell it years ago for $450....I'm a fan of the earlier "Plexi Circuit") Non-master Marshalls though...

Me too...this '82 is a great, great amp though. I had two. Sold them both when I got my handwired Marshall small box 50 watt heads...a '70 and '71. Still: this combo amp is one of the best combo amps I've ever owned and '82 is THE YEAR to own, IMO. Lew

I would much rather have a 4 hole non MV amp...but I hear good things aobut these amps!

The 800 series amps are great once you get the volume up to about 4 and above...At low volumes they are buzzy sounding because of the preamp gain vs output stage gain...

The 800 series is the ultimate 80's crunch monster amp, with a pretty lame clean tone, but they weren't used for clean tone anyway....

The NMV Marshalls to me,are warmer and smoother sounding and don't have preamp gain adjustment....One of the quickest and easiest mods to the 800 is to ship that darn .001 bright cap off the preamp master pot.....

Lew...are the 70 and 71 heads the plexi circut...or are the the metal front JMP circut...if my men=mory serves...the metal front started in 72 and then got a master volume in 75 then went to the 2 hole in the late 70's...is that right?

How do your small box heads sound...besides being loud as hell for 50 watts!!!

Re: Looking for a fabulous Marshall amp?

The funny thing about these amps, is that you can still find them for decent prices, but in a few short years, they'll get more and more scarce and start getting collectible as they're now starting to. Now, that boutiques have been out since the mid 90's, you can find some great bargains on those 'really good' P to P amps.

"Plexi" just stands for the material used on the front control panel...The biggest difference between actual Plexi and the later Metal panel ones is one cathode cap being left out on V2(If memory serves me) A .68 cap...Removing this cap cleans up the preamp a bit....There were changes to plate voltages also and the models differ in voltages over the course of early years while Marshall continued to dial in their amps to suit player's needs....

73 Metal panel Marshalls started out as point to point wired and changed about mid year to pcb....Not sure on the first MV Marshall as far as the year, but I think they called the amps 2203 and 2204 (100 and 50 watters)...I need to read again because some of this stuff is in the back of my head some place, but I'm pretty close I Know...I've been playing Marshalls for alot of years and I've played through several..

Re: Looking for a fabulous Marshall amp?

The 1972, 73, and 74 model year amps have a volume control that works more like an off/on switch...these amps are kind of unruly, but I love their tone!.

Re: Looking for a fabulous Marshall amp?

I had this EXACT same amp... everything about it was identical to this one and was one of the best-sounding Marshalls I'd ever come across. The only change i made was to have it rebiased for EL34's (it was an "American" JCM800 with 6550s) but that was it. GREAT tone but needed to be cranked to sound its best and that volume was loud enough to level small buldings. If you're looking for a killer Marshall tube combo this is the one you want. A one-trick pny for the most part but that is one SICK trick.

If I'd known about attenuators I NEVER would have sold it. Although mig50 has it now... you can ask him how he likes it. ;)

Re: Looking for a fabulous Marshall amp?

Yes..these were great sounding Marshalls if you stuffed some El-34s in them. Don't like the sound with 6550's.

I distinctly remember back home in VA at Rolls Music about 15 years or so ago this customer plugging into one of these amps with one of those old set-neck kramer strats with the angled pickup (JB?), and just having that elusive "perfect" Marshall tone. I was really taken back. Then he goosed it with a Boss Heavy Metal pedal, and again it just sounded incredible.
