Hughes & Kettner Grandmeister 40 Deluxe. You'll never need another amp ever.

This...
In a quick search on GC's Used section I found a MkII B, a MkIII, some Electra Dynes, Rect-O-Verb 50, and some Blue Angel's. All great amps.

I have a Blue Angel- it is one amazing amp. It has to be loud, though. No master volume on it.

I vote Traynor YCV40. They're a decent amp for under a grand.

What about the Egnater Rebel 30, the Mk II is supposed to have better transformers, more gain, and overall better quality.

Re: Looking for a good tube amp under $1000 suggestions?

I was just about to chime in for the Egnater Rebel 30 and I saw devastone's post.

This is a very excellent amp. Great clean tones a a super platform for pedals of any kind. It has both el84 and 6v6 power tubes with a blend control to have any mix you want of American and English tone. Great cleans with lots of headroom. The gain channel is ok but I prefer the gain from a stomp. It has a "bright/tight" switch which has a dramatic affect on the tone and performance especially with gain. It also has a separate watt control (to dial in anything between 1 and 30 watts) for each channel. Reverb with separate control for each channel, effects loop, xlr out and speaker mute switch for recording, selector switch for 4, 8, or 16 ohm spkrs, and it only weighs about 20 pounds. At about $750 new, you can't get a much better all-around tube amp.

I've had mine for about 15 years now and have absolutely no complaints whatsoever. I also have a Marshall, Bogner, Flextone 3, and several other amps but this Egnater is my #1 go-to amp.

If you've had it for 15 years I think that would be the Mk I version, the Mk II is supposed to be better on the gain channel and has beefier transformers and PCBs, apparently there were some reliability issues on some of the original versions. If yours has been working for 15 years I would guess it was not one with issues!

Re: Looking for a good tube amp under $1000 suggestions?

Recently saw a Dr. Z Maz Sr go for around 1000 shipped on ebay. One G12H speaker combo, spring reverb, all the headroom you'd ever need. Those things are LOUD. The Maz 18 might be even better (and cheaper) as a pedal platform since you don't want to be running a 38 watt Dr. Z with all that headroom and kick on a dirt pedal and basically double the output. A lot of Z's have built in attenuators for that reason, amongst others

Yes, mine was an original model. No issues with it. It just keeps on ticking.

Little surprised to see all this Egnater love. I had one that was extremely average and I've had a few sales guys imply they had some quality control issues plague them.

Sounds like they may have tightened up since my experience.
